We are seeking to recruit highly motivated and clinically focussed individuals as Specialists in Emergency Medicine. The successful candidates will join our existing team of 14 Consultants and Specialists. The team are committed to improving and advancing the quality of Emergency Care and deliver excellent training available locally and nationally. The successful candidate will work within a well-established and supportive multidisciplinary team. You will be based at the Weston General Hospital ED, part of Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (BFT).

### Main duties of the job

The hospital serves a resident population of around 212,000 people in North Somerset with over 70% of people living in the four main towns, Weston, Clevedon, Portishead and Nailsea. A further 5.1 million day trippers and 375,000 staying visitors increase this base population each year.

This is a busy Accident & Emergency department which operates between 0800hrs – 2200hrs. The department offers full emergency care services and sees approximately 56,000 patients annually. A Same Day Emergency Care Service (SDEC), Seashore Centre (Paediatrics) and a Medical Day Unit all support Urgent and Emergency care at the Weston Division. The department also provides a specific Geriatric Emergency Medicine Service (GEMs) supported by both the Frailty SDEC and the hospital Older Persons Assessment Unit (OPAU).

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Join a dynamic multidisciplinary team of senior medical, nursing, and management staff delivering and advancing high-quality Emergency Care across North Somerset and the surrounding areas. This busy coastal Emergency Department manages over 160 patients daily, offering a broad and complex case mix of patients of all ages. The role involves providing senior clinical presence on the shop floor from 08:00 to 00:00, seven days a week, with additional on-call responsibilities.

The appointee will lead the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients in the adult Emergency Department and contribute to care within the ED Observation Unit. Close collaboration with the hospitals Assessment units, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), ICU, and specialty teams is essential to ensure seamless, patient-centred care. Emergency staff retain responsibility for immediate care, while ongoing management is coordinated with relevant specialties.

As a Specialist at Weston General Hospital Emergency Department you will get to strike a unique balance of hands on patient care and department management as the Emergency Physician In Charge (EPIC)

The post includes leadership responsibilities during major incidents and supports emergency admissions under on-call specialty teams.

## Person Specification

### Clinical Governance

**Essential**

- Awareness of the requirements of clinical governance, with particular reference to the specialty.

**Desirable**

- Completion of formal courses in aspects of clinical governance.
- Formal experience in the development of patient safety systems as pertaining to Emergency Medicine.

### Qualifications & Training

**Essential**

- Fully registered with GMC.
- Completed a minimum of 12 years medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification, of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a relevant specialty
- Meets the criteria set out in the generic capabilities’ framework for the specialist grade which has been developed by AoMRC, BMA and NHS Employers4,5.

**Desirable**

- Higher degree eg MSc, PhD, MD.
- Instructor in one or more life support courses (ALS/ATLS/PALS/APLS or equivalent).
- Additional sub-speciality training qualifications, particularly in : PEM

### Research/Teaching/Publications

**Essential**

- Demonstrable teaching ability and research experience.
- Commitment to participate in research throughout the Emergency Medicine Service.
- Willingness to undertake teaching of clinical staff at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

**Desirable**

- Published research and audit.
- History of designing and leading regional or national studies.
- Peer reviewed publications

### Professional Practice/ Clinical Skills

**Essential**

- Evidence of first-rate professional practice.
- Able to demonstrate clinical skills in managing the full range of patient presentations as defined in the Royal College Emergency medicine Curriculum

**Desirable**

- Evidence of extended clinical skills in areas pertinent to acute and emergency care including but not exclusive to: Intensive Care medicine, Pre hospital medicine, point of care ultrasound, advanced airway management

### Further training, eg, Management, Audit

**Essential**

- Experience of clinical audit and education
- Evidence of completion of audit project including implementation of recommendations
- Evidence of delivering Quality Improvement Projects
- Evidence to provide clinical leadership for audit programmes

**Desirable**

- Completion of formal courses in clinical audit & education
- Participation in or delivery of management training courses
- Formal training in QIP methodology

### Interpersonal, communication and team working skills

**Essential**

- Evidence of management experience
- Evidence of good team working with peers and other senior colleagues.
- Flexible attitude and good communication skills.
- Ability to integrate into and share leadership of a multidisciplinary team
- Commitment to the provision of emergency services throughout the Bristol community, and to continuing professional development.

**Desirable**

- Recognised leadership skills and qualifications
- Has demonstrated ability to well work under pressure and in difficult circumstances
- To be able to demonstrate team leadership skills and work on own initiative.
- Formal training in Clinical Leadership
