## Job Content

### Job overview

This vacancy is for a new additional Specialist Grade Psychiatrist post which has arisen due to a review of the current medical workload on the acute wards. The successful applicant will provide additional medical and clinical leadership to the acute inpatient ward in an established acute care pathway team based on Ward 3 Becklin Centre which is a 22 bedded male unit.  Ward 3 along with Ward 4 Becklin and Ward 4 Newsam make up the Male Acute Inpatient Service and the Specialist, alongside the Consultant Psychiatrist  is expected to be a key member of that leadership team which ensures high quality standards of care are established, monitored and further developed, within a culture of learning and improvement, which enables all staff to work effectively alongside men with acute mental health problems to best meet their needs.

Following a recent workload review, the acute wards have moved to a model where there are two Approved Clinicians per ward – a fulltime Consultant Psychiatrist and either a MPAC, a less than fulltime Consultant or a Specialist Psychiatrist.

### Main duties of the job

The Specialist and the Consultant will be expected to work in a reciprocal way, whilst having a bed base that they are primarily responsible for; for instance in providing cover for each other and supporting difficult decision making. It is anticipated that one of the advantages of this model will be to not only reduce workload, but to share some of the risk and complexity by using each other’s expertise and opinion in the most complex scenarios. The anticipated bed base will be 16 for the 10PA Consultant and approx. 6 for the Specialist post holder. This may fluctuate at times temporarily, but efforts will be made to ensure this is by no more than 2 beds,  the aim always being that the bed base for each post will be as above.
