### Job summary

We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist with the IBMS Specialist Diploma (or equivalent) in Cellular Pathology to join our friendly and supportive team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Based primarily at St James's University Hospital, Leeds, this Specialist Biomedical Scientist role sits within a large, highly specialised Cellular Pathology service, supporting the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services for a diverse range of patients across the region. Applicants should have practical experience of Cellular Pathology laboratory techniques to specialist BMS level, a commitment to quality, and a passion for delivering excellence in patient care. This is an exciting opportunity to work across the full Cellular Pathology pathway, rotating through reception and dissection, the main laboratory, further work, molecular diagnostics and cytology. Working alongside Advanced Biomedical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists, associate practitioners, Biomedical support workers and supported by dedicated Quality and Training Managers, you will play a key role in ensuring the timely and accurate processing of diagnostic specimens. We are looking for an organised, proactive and collaborative individual who can work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, lead by example, and contribute to continuous service improvement.

### Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist you will be expected to perform a range of specialist clinical technical investigations. You may be required to work in a team or independently, for example when working on-call. You will have the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards the provision of an accurate, timely service for patients. You will be expected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations. You may be required to organize the tasks of Biomedical Scientists, associate practitioners and support workers. The post holder will primarily assist in the day to day running of lab areas, under supervision/delegation of the Advanced Biomedical Scientist. You will participate as required in BMS duties within reception, cut-up, main lab, further work, molecular, Non-cervical cytology and specialist histology areas of the department. This will also involve QC and EQA authorisation, training, risk and incident assessment and investigation and HR procedures. The department operates Monday to Saturday between 7:30am and 7:30pm, incorporating standard and extended day shifts, with a minimum requirement to work 1 in 4 Saturdays.

- Ability to participate in the delivery of a 24 hour Pathology service, including contracted participation in a 24/7 rota and / or the out of hour rota.
- Willingness and ability to work across site locations (LGI & SJUH) if the service requires it.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and protect sensitive information related to patient care.
- Ability to comply with infection control, health and safety, risk management and departmental policies.
- Ability to work in a laboratory environment with prolonged periods sitting or standing at the bench and exposure to potentially infectious pathological samples.
- Ability to move light and moderate loads up to 15kg, with occasional movement of loads of 20kg with the aid of a trolley.

### Qualifications and Training

**Essential**

- Successfully studied for an accredited degree in biomedical sciences, or other equivalent qualification acceptable to the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
- Maintain registered status as a biomedical scientist with the Health Care Professions Council.
- Undertaken all mandatory training required for the role.
- Commitment to continuous professional development (CPD).
