Please note: at this stage, the role is open only to colleagues currently employed within Kent and Medway NHS Trusts, the Kent and Medway Integrated Care Board (ICB) and Medway Community Healthcare or working on the Staff Bank within these organisations. Nursing and AHP vacancies are also open to Student Nurses and Newly Qualified Nurses/AHPs.

The Special Schools Nursing Network partners with special schools to ensure children with complex health needs can safely access education.

By working collaboratively as a network, we enhance the capacity of our nursing service, prioritising and delivering training and competency assessments for school staff across designated schools.

Special Schools Nurses assess and triage to determine health tasks that can be delegated to school staff, who are then trained, supervised, and assessed for competency in delivering these tasks. This process includes ongoing supervision and observation throughout the year to ensure school staff feel supported and remain proficient. Additionally, staff receive refresher training, and their competency is reassessed annually or sooner if required.

This post does involve training across school and offering support to any school/team that needs support.

### Main duties of the job

Empathy for children and young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities, along with exceptional communication skills, are essential attributes for this role.

This position will have line management responsibility of a Band 5 – your role will be to prioritise workload – maintaining a excellent professional relationship with the health lead of the school. You will oversee all the training activity and delegate to the band 5 as well as carrying. Below is an example of daily duties that you can amend and delete as appropriate Your daily activities will be varied to include: o Managing a caseload. o Delivering presentations on general health awareness for mixed groups from 1 to 1 to 250 plus people. o Carrying out health needs assessments. o Ensure school staff are safe to carry out health tasks by teaching and through competency assessments. o Liaise with other professionals around the health needs of the children. o Maintaining accurate records of the training and assessments. o Sign post parents and school staff to other services as required. o Cover multiple schools as a Specials school nursing network which involves travel to other bases. o Attend meeting around the children’ health needs acting as an advocate. o Line managing the band 5 to ensure they develop and grow as well as delivering the model both across multiple sites.

### Qualification

**Essential**

- You will have a Level 6 Degree or equivalent qualification, or equivalent knowledge acquired through experience plus a diploma in nursing
- You will be a registered health care professional with the Nursing and Midwifery Council

### Working Environment

**Essential**

- A full, valid UK driving licence or a full driving licence issued by an EU country (not exchanged from a non-EU country) and the ability to travel independently are essential for this role.

### Knowledge and skills

**Essential**

- You’ll need have sound communication skills in order to understand and communicate both verbally and in writing.

- You will have knowledge of up to date clinical practice by using up- to- date skills and adhering to evidence-based procedures and clinical effectiveness frameworks.
- You will need to be able to be able to use IT systems and databases.
