Planned Care Unit Sister/Charge Nurse

Department: Planned Care Unit Band: 6 £39,959 – £48,117  per annum, pro rata

15 hours per week permanent

All MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

The Planned Care Unit (PCU) is a nurse-led day case service delivering planned infusion therapies, transfusion care and diagnostic investigations for stable adult patients. Care includes treatments such as IV iron, biologic therapies and blood transfusions, alongside a range of specialist diagnostic tests, within a supportive, patient-centred environment.

This Band 6 role involves patient assessment, IV access, infusion delivery, ongoing monitoring and safe discharge. You will work in line with Trust policies and PCU standard operating procedures and collaborate closely with pharmacy and referring clinical teams to ensure safe, timely patient care, with appropriate escalation when required.

We are seeking an experienced nurse with strong IV and assessment skills, excellent attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering safe, high-quality, patient-centred care. This secondment offers opportunities to develop specialist infusion skills, enhance clinical assessment capabilities and build advanced competence within a structured and supportive environment.

The post holder will work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver the highest standard of safe, effective and evidence-based clinical nursing care for patients attending the Planned Care Unit (PCU). This includes the provision of planned infusion therapies, diagnostic investigations and transfusion support, incorporating comprehensive patient assessment, IV access, infusion administration, patient monitoring and safe discharge planning.

The successful candidate will deliver high-quality patient care on a daily basis and be knowledgeable in all relevant aspects of nursing practice from admission to discharge, including resuscitation and stabilisation where required. They will use sound clinical judgement to assess patients, interpret clinical observations and investigation results, and escalate concerns promptly and appropriately to ensure patient safety. Working in partnership with patients, relatives and the multidisciplinary team, they will communicate clearly, professionally and compassionately, ensuring the timely exchange of information, effective teamwork and a positive patient experience.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

They will coordinate the day-to-day clinical activity within the PCU, prioritising patient care, responding to changing workloads and supporting efficient patient flow to ensure the safe and effective running of the unit. The role also involves supporting the Senior Sisters in maintaining high standards of clinical care, contributing to service improvement and clinical practice development, and promoting a culture of excellence, safety and continuous quality improvement within the PCU.

Clinical

- To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care of patients, incorporating the standards and philosophy of the department and evidence-based research.
- Organise method of care delivery within the department, allocating, prioritising and delegating effectively. This includes responding to capacity and patient dependency requirements.

Professional

- To demonstrate a professional approach to leadership and management of staff.
- To provide clinical support and advice to junior members of staff.

Service Management

- To assist when necessary, with the definition of nursing standards and maintain the provision and effectiveness of those standards in line with clinical governance.
- The post holder will ensure that they are aware of all issues relating to Clinical Governance, Quality Assurance and Clinical Effectiveness and that they carry out their duties in accordance with these frameworks and standards.

Education

- To help to create and maintain an environment conducive to development and learning for all staff.
- To assist in identifying the need for and providing training/education in clinical nursing and managerial techniques to all grades of staff.

Management

- To be responsible for the day to day running of the department in the absence of the Senior Sister/ Charge Nurse.
- Promote effective communication within the nursing team, to patients, carers, visitors, members of the multi-disciplinary team and external agencies. Receiving and reporting sensitive information, as appropriate taking into account rules of confidentiality
