Job overview

The role will involve assisting with the safe administration of systemic anti-cancer treatment and supportive therapies to patients in the Northern Cancer Centre, Carlisle and Henderson Suite Whitehaven.

Assisting the senior nursing team in delivering a safe and efficient service.

You will be expected to assist with leading the team, management of the budget, motivate staff, problem solve, role model and implement change. You will ensure the delivery of high-quality care and safety. The ability to communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team is essential. You will need to be hard working and able to demonstrate the Trust Values within everyday work.

You will need to be a registered nurse, SACT trained with ENB 998 (or equivalent) and ideally educated to degree level or working towards and have completion of an oncology course. The Senior Nursing Team (Ward Manager, Deputy Ward Manager and Matron for chemotherapy service) will support you in this role.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to be responsible for all aspects of patient care including assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of direct patient care.

To promote a positive patient focused service, incorporating patient's feedback to maintain and improve patient care.

To take a lead on delegated responsibilities as defined by the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse and Matron.

To manage, lead and motivate junior staff ensuring compliance of mandatory training and appraisals.

In the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to deputise in their absence and have day-to-day responsibility for the smooth running of the unit, providing clinical leadership to the nursing team, ensuring that evidence-based care is delivered to a high clinical standard.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse, acting as a deputy when the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse is absent.
  • In areas within the organisation nurses may be banded at 6 by virtue clinical reasons, for example, critical care.
  • Provide effective support and leadership to both staff, patients and carers within the ward or department.
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students.
  • Ensure systems are in place to provide the continuity of safe effective care for patients at all times.
  • Effective member of the multi-disciplinary team.
