### JOB SUMMARY

The post holder will undertake the role of advanced specialised Biomedical Scientist to lead a department/ section(s) to make sure that the service is delivered to the required standards and quality. They will join a team of Advanced Specialist Biomedical Scientists within the Cellular Pathology department, who are responsible for all aspects of sample processing. The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the efficient day to day running of this section within Cellular Pathology.

The post holder will lead appointed department/ section(s) within the Cellular Pathology Laboratory.

They will work closely with the management team to manage a team of scientific and support staff.

The post-holder will play a key role in the modernisation of the service and be involved in a range of improvement initiatives across the service

The post holder will be expected to provide evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in cellular pathology.

The post holder must hold and maintain Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration.

### KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Service Delivery

Responsible for the day to day running of the appointed department/section(s) within the Cellular Pathology laboratory, understanding the principles of and the performance of all procedures relating to this area of activity.

Responsible for the supervision and training of other grades of staff, providing personal and direct supervision to appropriate levels of staff as required.

Ensure accuracy of tests performance and results within the section.

Be responsible for updating and maintaining accurate patient information held within the pathology systems.

Manage the technical activities of the relevant department/section(s) in accordance with trust and departmental policy and to regulatory standards.

Understand the principles and the performance of all diagnostic procedures in section of responsibility.

Ensure that all patient samples and all peripheral tasks are successfully performed in accordance with approved laboratory Standard Operating Procedures.

Manage workflow and problem solving within the laboratory, understanding the impact on other sections and alerting the Cellular Pathology Lead if service delivery may be compromised.

Set and monitor maintenance schedules, and act as a source of expertise for troubleshooting and maintenance, co-ordinating with company engineers and laboratory staff to ensure minimal disruption and continuity of service.

Record and manage laboratory equipment, service history information, and ensure equipment failures are managed appropriately in a timely fashion.

Ensure that ordering of stocks of reagents, chemicals, consumables and any non-capital equipment are appropriate for service delivery.

Maintain competency in relevant areas and continue to develop in the practice of pathology techniques keeping up to date with RCPath data sets.

Assist in the production of key performance indicators and environmental monitoring information.

Assist in administration duties of the overall Cellular Pathology Laboratory as a team of Advanced Scientists.

Ensure that the needs of patients, clients and their carers are at the core of the way the services are delivered.

To maintain good and effective communication skills.

Attend all relevant meetings, including Quality meeting, providing regular review of Internal Quality Control procedures and External Quality Assessment programmes and to ensure prompt action where failures occur.

Available / able to work any 5 days out of 7 over the 24-hour period, which may include on-call / stand-by / sleep-in duties, shifts, night duty, weekends and Public Holidays if required immediately on appointment or at a later stage following commencement in response to changing demands of the service

Carry out any other duties not specified above, but which might be reasonably expected of a Biomedical Scientist Band 7.

Quality & Governance

Responsible for ensuring training and competency is fully documented in line with IS015189 requirements.

Responsible for the maintenance and updating of all relevant Standard Operating Procedures in line with relevant regulations and guidelines as relevant, including ISO15189 and ensure they are consistent with the quality policy of the laboratory.

Partake and contribute to the laboratory audit programme

Responsible for ensuring that the ethical and moral dimensions of practice are followed.

Lead, record and review investigations into errors and adverse incidents.

Trend incidents and related issues to help identify opportunities for future improvement or changes to practice, where appropriate.

Understand and implement Internal Quality Control procedures and External Quality Assessment programmes and to ensure prompt action where failures or declining performance trends occur.

Ensure procedures are documented and are accurate in line with document control policy.

Ensure that all diagnostic tests/ equipment have been adequately validated and verified for accuracy of performance and are reviewed as required.

Leadership & People Management

Train others in their practice according to laboratory standards and provide mentoring.

Lead the team of scientific and support staff in accordance with Trust and departmental policy and to regulatory standards.

Undertake HR related management duties as assigned and in line with the trust polices.

Draw up staff rotas which allow staff to experience a wide range of analytical activities.

Participate in annual performance review and appraisal of self and staff within the cellular pathology laboratory

Research & Development

The post holder is expected to direct agreed scientific development, improvement, and research performed by scientific and medical staff in the department.

Health & Safety

Maintain health and safety protocols/standards in the laboratory working area.

Ensure that all procedures are carried out according to laboratory safety rules and are consistent with Trust policies and recognise and accept safety regulations, guidelines and policy.

Ensure H&S risk assessments are completed on the tasks and environment of the laboratory

Collaborative Working

Cooperate with all staff in Cellular Pathology, other departments and other Trusts in the promotion of an integrated and efficient laboratory service.
