Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital ICU Technical Services, provides the Technical Support Service to Critical Care comprising of Adult Intensive Care Unit (one of the largest in Europe), Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care and High Dependency Units.

These units have a worldwide reputation for clinical excellence in tertiary care provision.

### Main duties of the job

This is a unique opportunity to work in a technical department that supports all these disciplines of Critical Care. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated technologist to join our expanding team.  Duties will involve maintaining all medical equipment within these increasingly “high tech” areas, including teaching/training and testing, calibration of equipment, performing physiological measurements, assisting in diagnostic procedures and supporting Point of Care devices.  There will be a requirement to work nights and weekend shifts.  Successful applicants to the full senior position will have to demonstrate relevant work experience.  They will have to have a degree in a relevant science subject (or equivalent experience) and have a major interest in instrumentation and technology.

Trainee applicants are welcomed from recent graduates in a Physiological science background. If necessary, training will be provided under Annex 21 with progression to the senior band 6 position after training (unless already STP registered), completion of our competency log book and a period of consolidation (1-2 years dependent on relevant experience).

If anyone is offered a training contract, you will be paid a training salary as a percentage of the top of Band 6.

Up to 12 months prior to completion of training: 75 per cent of the pay band maximum, more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training: 70 per cent of the pay band maximum.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Section 1: Main Duties & Responsibilities

Medical Device Management & Device Safety

- Device Lifecycle: Responsible for the routine maintenance, servicing, and complicated calibrations of all respiratory, ventilation, and sundry intensive care unit (ICU) equipment at manufacturer-prescribed intervals.
- In-Service Inspections: Conduct rigorous, scheduled safety inspections and operational checks on all critical sundry equipment within the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), including ECG, peristaltic/volumetric/syringe pumps, suction units, heater/cooler mattresses, and defibrillators.
- Hygiene & Infection Control: Oversee and execute the cleaning, sterilization, setup, and calibration of diagnostic, ventilation, and respiratory equipment, strictly adhering to Trust policies on sample handling and infection control.
- Enhanced Protocols: Maintain strict universal precautions against infection, executing enhanced containment and cleaning procedures in the instance of a notifiable pathogen or infection.

Bedside Troubleshooting & Patient- Facing Care

- Ventilation & Respiratory Support: Set up, calibrate, and connect all types of patient monitoring systems, metabolic monitoring equipment, and patient ventilator/respiratory equipment directly at the bedside.
- Critical Troubleshooting: Provide expert, high-level fault finding and real-time troubleshooting under high-pressure clinical scenarios. Recommend appropriate equipment configurations to meet the immediate demands of complex diagnostic tests or changing patient conditions.
- Intra-Hospital Transfers: Actively participate in the safe transfer of mechanically ventilated and critically ill patients to diagnostic departments within the institution (e.g., MRI, CT).
- Clinical Resilience: Demonstrate a flexible, adaptable, and proactive approach to problem-solving while operating calmly within stressful and fast-paced clinical environments.

Advanced Cardiac Monitoring

- Specialist Procedures: Assist directly in complex diagnostic catheterization procedures.
- Hemodynamic Assessment: Perform and interpret advanced hemodynamic measurements to support clinical decision-making in real time.

Point of Care Testing (POCT)

- Emergency Diagnostics: Perform emergency, rapid-turnaround analysis of pathology specimens across multiple disciplines, including blood gas, biochemistry, haematology, and coagulation.
- Quality Assurance: Ensure the rigorous execution of daily cleaning, Quality Control (QC) procedures, and operational performance checks.
- Data Analysis & EQA: Analyse daily QC data to ensure all patient tests fall within required specifications, and actively manage the monthly External Quality Assurance (EQA) process.

Facilitating teaching & Multidisciplinary (MDT) Education

- MDT In-Service Training: Develop and deliver structured in-service training programs and specialized courses for medical, nursing, and junior technical staff.
- Ad-Hoc Education: Provide dynamic, responsive bedside teaching and ad-hoc technical guidance to the wider Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).
- Workforce Development: Supervise and mentor Scientist Training Programme (STP) trainees and clinical staff on rotation from other specialties as required. Take part in mandatory training programmes such as Basic & Intermediate life support, manual handling, Fire Safety, IPC, and others.
- Research & Development: Actively support and contribute to the unit’s ongoing clinical research, innovation, and development programs.

Section 2: General & Professional Requirements

- Operational Demands: Participate fully in extra-duty rotas, including night shifts and weekend coverage, to ensure continuous 24/7 service delivery.
- Stock & Resource Control: Collaborate with senior technologists to manage troubleshooting activities and maintain optimal stock levels for all ward- and laboratory-related disposables.
- Compliance: Uphold and champion all relevant Trust policies and procedures, including Health & Safety, Manual Handling, Fire Safety, Infection Control (IPC), and Basic Life Support (BLS).
