### JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Senior Dental Nurse

LOCATION: BHSCT Dental Services - peadiatric dental dept

BAND: 5

REPORTS TO: Dental Nurse Manager

RESPONSIBLE TO: Assistant Dental Services Manager

Job Summary / Main Purpose

The post holder will support the clinical specialty to ensure the provision of a high standard of patient care and that all trust policies and procedures are adhered to. This will include chairside support as well as supporting the dental nurse manager and other senior dental nurses in the delivery of dentistry, training and development of the service.

To work with the dental nurse manager and other senior dental nurses to educate and develop dental nursing team to respond to the complex needs of patients within the service.

Promote good working relations in the dental team and be a role model to other dental nurses.

Main Duties / Responsibilities

For each of the following, the postholder will;

Ensure high standards of patient care are maintained at all times in the clinical area under the control of the senior dental nurse.

Ensure medical emergency drugs and equipment are available and up to date.

Attend to patients needs in an emergency situation and ensure that dental nurse staff are aware of emergency procedures.

Supervise the general organization of the clinic to promote efficient use of staff, instrumentation and materials. Ensuring that supplies and equipment are available to meet the needs of the clinic, including ordering and monitoring stock/non- stock items.

Supervision and line management of dental staff in your department i.e. Dental Nurses /ATO’s including allocation of annual leave, recording of sickness/referring to Occupational Health and other leave on HRPTS. Participate on the nurse in charge Rota and complete weekly dental nurse Rota for your area ensuring safe levels of dental nursing provision.

Participate and assist in induction and training of staff in your designated department.

Undertake appraisals of staff in your department and support them to maintain CPD and mandatory training requirements and record on departmental training matrix.

Ensure that all clinics are ready and equipment is in working order. Report and monitor any breakdowns in a timely fashion. Department Equipment controller for your area of responsibility, working alongside the dental nurse manager to ensure all equipment is on a maintenance and service schedule.

Ensure patient’s records are available before clinic starts, undertake duties associated with patient attendances including charting, clinical dictation under direction of operator, appointments, outcomes, recalls and statistics. Ensure correct clinical / laboratory request forms are available and assist in completion, make sure lab work is available at start of day.

Maintain aseptic technique and assist at chairside during dental procedures. Maintain a clear field of vision and anticipate the needs of the operator and patient.

Prepare and mix materials for various procedures.

Assist clinicians in all types of dental procedures including treatments carried out under GA, IV sedation and RA. Accompany or arrange for dental nurses to attend domiciliary visits, screenings, ward visits/ED and any other departments relevant to patient needs in your particular department.

Explain recommended Oral Hygiene techniques and aids under the direction of the dentist/hygienist/therapist.

Answer and respond to telephone queries from patient.

Ensure correct procedures are adhered to including the processes for storage and processing of instrumentation sent to CDU making sure traceability is kept. Correct disposal of single use instruments. Completion of pre procurement questionnaire before new instrumentation is put into the system.

Education, Research and Practice Development

Support and assist the undergraduate dental students.

Support and assist Trainee Dental Nurses , QDN and ATO’s in the clinical area including updating on new procedures, materials , policy’s and keep up to date with changes and developments in clinical practice.

Participate in clinical audits, PPI and Quality Improvement projects.

Maintain mandatory training as specified by BHSCT.

Maintain CPD training in line with GDC requirements.

Participate in the interview and selection process for staff vacancies.

Health and Safety Requirements

Wear the appropriate PPE and safety equipment provided as appropriate.

Maintain high standards of work practices in accordance with health and safety policies, C.O.S.H.H regulations, incident reporting procedures, hand hygiene and infection prevention and control policy’s. Ensure that staff/students are aware of relevant policies and procedures and that they adhere to them at all times. Ensure completion of BRAAT for areas responsible for. Participate in Audits. Ensure completion of General risk assessments, COSHH Risk assessments and standard operating procedures for relevant area.

Ensure that the clinic is cleared at end of day and all equipment and units made safe, ensuring all end of day checks and cleaning schedules are updated and reviewed regularly.

Ensure safe disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste according to trust policy.

Other Duties

Any other duties assigned to the senior dental nurse by the dental nurse manager relevant to their area of responsibility.

Environmental Cleaning Strategy

Infection Prevention and Control

The Belfast Trust is committed to reducing Healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) and all staff have a part to play in making this happen.
