Join iCARE (Imperial Clinical Analytics, Research & Evaluation) and help shape the future of data-driven healthcare. We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team and play a key role in advancing secure NHS research infrastructure through innovative use of health data.

iCARE is a cutting-edge health data and analytics initiative and home to Imperial’s Azure based Secure Data Environment, bringing together clinical expertise, research capability and advanced analytics to unlock the potential of health data and improve patient outcomes. Working across digital health, Artificial Intelligence and Real-World Evidence, you will contribute to nationally significant programmes, including the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Imperial Biomedical Research Centre and the Paddington Life Sciences initiative. You will work alongside clinicians, researchers, data scientists and engineers in a collaborative, forward-thinking environment, helping to transform complex healthcare data into trusted research assets that drive innovation and improve patient care.

### Main duties of the job

- As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be a key member of iCARE, leading the design, development and optimisation of secure, scalable data platforms and services that enable high-quality health research.
- You will play an integral role in the continued evolution of the Imperial Biomedical Research Centre’s Azure based NHS Secure Data Environment.
- You will also drive the delivery of a portfolio of translational projects within the Digital Health theme of the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre, a £95 million translational research initiative supporting the development of new treatments, diagnostics and technologies that benefit patients and communities locally, regionally and nationally.
- Working within the iCARE NHS Data Engineering Unit, you will manage and curate large volumes of healthcare and other data using advanced technologies.
- You will champion modern data engineering practices, provide technical leadership, and collaborate with expert stakeholders across multiple disciplines.
- Your work will help ensure data solutions meet the needs of patients, staff and local communities, supporting social purpose, care equity and the ongoing digital transformation of the NHS.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Demonstrable experience in healthcare informatics or analytics.
- Experience in a data integration role with the ability to apply logical thinking using a wide range of data processing tools and techniques to build and integrate solutions in a highly complex environment
- Advanced use of SQL to extract data from large complex databases
- Advanced use of Excel (macro level).
- Experience in delivering solutions in public and the NHS services.
- Experience of Metadata documentation and development

**Desirable**

- Experience of managing projects.
- Experience of managing teams to underpin knowledge of HR, staff performance and workforce issues.
- Demonstrable experience at a senior level in healthcare
- Informatics management role.
- Experience of Cerner Millennium
- Experience of implementing OMOP
- Experience of NLP
- Azure DevOps and GIT experience
- IT Project Management knowledge and experience

### Education/ Qualifications

**Essential**

- Degree level or equivalent experience (relevant to role).
- Evidence of ongoing personal and professional development

**Desirable**

- Management qualification or equivalent experience
- Qualification in Project Management.
- Masters in IT / informatics

### Skills/Knowledge/ Abilities

**Essential**

- Strong knowledge and understanding of health data including health data models, coding systems and ontologies (e.g. SNOMED CT), and NHS data standards / definitions.
- Good level of technical skills, underpinned by theory and practice, in designing systems, handling sensitive data, automating data processing that will support data presentation and interpretation.
- Highly Advanced SQL Server, SSIS DBT or Snowflake
- Advanced knowledge of Python and SQL
- Advanced data modelling knowledge
- Good knowledge of Electronic Health Record systems (e.g. Cerner/Epic etc) and other HealthCare IT systems.
- Advanced knowledge of ETL (Extract, Transform, and Load) processes.
- Change control and software development good practice
- Ability to perform DBA\\Developer activities with minimum of four years Data Warehouse experience

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of Cerner data model
- Proven people management, leadership, team building and motivation skills.
- Clear vision of health informatics as an enabler to modernisation.
- Knowledge of data science and statistics
- Knowledge of Cerner frontend
