An exciting internal opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Neonatal Doctor to join our dynamic team at the Royal Bolton Hospital as a Senior Clinical Fellow (Tier 2/Registrar Equivalent). Royal Bolton Hospital operates a highly respected, state-of-the-art Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). As a vital tertiary hub within the Greater Manchester Neonatal Network, our unit features 16 Intensive Care / High Dependency (ITU/HDU) cots and 19 Special Care (SC) cots. This role offers a fantastic opportunity for an internal clinician to gain deep, broad-based experience in advanced neonatal critical care, work with cutting-edge equipment, and step up into a middle-grade leadership framework.

Please note that Clinical Fellows are paid on a local pay scale that mirrors Doctors in Training pay scales. Basic salary offered for this role is fixed at £67,325 and will not be uplifted beyond that salary point. Where the role requires out of hours working, evening, weekend and on call enhancements will be added according to a work schedule. It is Trust practice that we offer a set salary for this role and variations will not be considered.

### Main duties of the job

NICU Inpatient Management: Conduct daily ward rounds, delivering and implementing comprehensive acute care plans across Intensive, High Dependency, Special, and Transitional Care.

- Delivery Suite Response: Act as the senior resident medical responder leading resuscitation and immediate stabilization efforts for extremely premature neonates and high-risk deliveries.
- Tier 1 Clinical Leadership: Directly assist, mentor, and supervise Tier 1 doctors (ST1-2/FY2), and work alongside Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs).
- Procedural Autonomy: Competently perform advanced neonatal procedures under regional guidelines, including UVC/UAC line placement, lumbar punctures, and PICC lines.
- Family Liaison & System Tracking: Maintain compassionate, transparent communication with parents
- Out-of-Hours & Rota Cover: Complete resident shifts on a fully compliant rolling Tier 2 rota (days, long days, nights) and provide prospective cover for unexpected short-term internal sickness.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Senior Clinical Fellow (Tier 2) is a pivotal middle-grade role. You will provide expert, resident clinical care for highly complex neonates, lead resuscitation efforts on the delivery suite, and actively supervise Tier 1 junior doctors (ST1-2/FY2) and work alongside Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs).The post allows dedicated Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) time to develop sub-speciality interests.

### Skills

**Essential**

- Team working Fluent written and spoken English. Ability to break down highly complex medical diagnoses to parents under severe distress. / Ability to coordinate a shift, delegate tasks effectively, and supervise Tier 1 doctors, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs) / High commitment to the core trust principles: Compassion, Excellence, Openness, and Integrity. / Emotional capability to handle highly acute situations. / Willingness to work a fully EWTD-compliant shift pattern (days, long days, and nights).

**Desirable**

- Experience using electronic patient record systems (such as Badgernet) / Active championing of family-centered developmental care methodologies

### Experience

**Essential**

- Minimum 24 months in Paediatrics/Neonatology, with at least 6/12 months within level 2/3 Neonatal Unit / Competency in basic and advanced neonatal technical skills: intubation, UVC/UAC line placement, lumbar puncture etc. / Capability to lead medical management across NICU, High Dependency (HDU), Special Care (SCU) and transitional care settings / Experience leading resuscitation efforts at extremely premature and high-risk deliveries.

**Desirable**

- Prior experience working at Tier 2 (Registrar/Middle Grade) level in a UK NHS framework / Knowledge of advanced ventilation modes (e.g. HFOV, Nitric Oxide therapies) / Experience with neonatal surgical emergencies

### Education/Qualifications

**Essential**

- Primary Medical Qualification (MBBS or equivalent) / Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at the start of employment / Valid Newborn Life Support (NLS) certificate

**Desirable**

- MRCPCH Part 1, 2 or full membership or equivalent / Advanced Resuscitation of Newborn

### Governance, Audit & Academic

**Essential**

- Understanding of clinical risk management, medical errors and the learning loops in patient safety / Evidence of completing at least one clinical audit cycle or Quality Improvement Project (QIP) / Experience providing bedside teaching and informal clinical skills training to junior medical staff (Tier 1)

**Desirable**

- Completed projects that led to local guideline or protocol updates / Formal teaching qualification
