### Job overview

The post will offer excellent clinical experience in Plastic Surgery with a focus on surgical oncology including microsurgical reconstruction, working closely with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of surgical specialties, medical and clinical oncology. The post could suit those wishing to gain specialist Plastic Surgery experience prior to embarking on a training programme. The post provides excellent opportunities to build surgical skills and there is good scope for audit and publications.

The overall clinical workload will involve management of inpatients, attendance at theatre and outpatient sessions along with presenting at MDTs.

This post is designed to support specialised oncologic plastic surgery and reconstruction at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust which is a tertiary referral centre for the treatment of cancer. It will provide the appointee with excellent opportunities to further operative experience and clinical management of oncological surgery patients.

### Main duties of the job

The appointee will be expected to be involved in all areas of oncologic plastic surgery and microsurgical reconstruction, providing cover where necessary. The appointee will work closely with the 6 Consultants, Specialty Doctor’s and the Registrars who rotate through the unit. They will get involve with all aspects of oncological plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery and microsurgery.          The successful candidate will have regular outpatient clinics and will be expected to attend both local and general anaesthetic lists, where there will be excellent opportunities to perform and learn new surgical procedures under varying levels of supervision dependent upon the experience of the appointee Specific Duties will include:     Participation in the primary care of patients admitted to The Christie      To oversee the daily care of inpatients, as an integral part of the plastics team     Attendance at outpatient clinics and theatre lists as required by the supervising consultant.     Management of dedicated single stream clinics with new and follow-up patients running alongside a consultant’s clinic     Monitoring of plastic surgery flaps

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES This will offer excellent clinical experience in Plastic surgery, working closely with multi-disciplinary teams consisting of other onco-surgical specialities, medical and clinical oncology.

The overall clinical workload will involve management of in-patients, attendance at theatre and outpatient sessions, MDTs and working closely with the clinical nurse specialists within the department. The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input input Mr D. Mowatt - Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon  Mr D. Oudit - Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon / Clinical Lead Mr D. Kosutic - Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Mr N. Mabvuure - Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Mr T. Grecu - Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Mr S. Rahman - Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon 2 Specialty Doctors 1 Head and Neck Fellow (on rotation) 2 Clinical Fellows  2 STRs

The other surgical specialties at The Christie are the Colorectal and Peritoneal Tumour Service, Gynae-Oncology, Plastic Surgery, Photodynamic Therapy and Head and Neck (outpatients only).

The Consultants have access to surgical beds on Ward 10 which are allocated according to need.  There is a surgical day case unit with facilities for preoperative assessment. The Anaesthetic service is provided by the Department of Anaesthesia at The Christie by the Clinical Director   supported via a SLA for anaesthesia with The University Hospital South Manchester.  All Consultant Surgeons and Anaesthetists with sessional commitments to the Christie Hospital are members of the Directorate of Surgery and Anaesthetics in the division of Cancer Centre Services.

The department of plastic surgery at The Christie has effectively two separate roles; one is in the management of skin and soft tissue tumours that need removal and secondly, the team provides a reconstructive service for the group and for patients requiring reconstruction following breast, colorectal, gynaecological and urological surgery. The team also integrates with the nationally funded NF1 and NF2 services.  The successful candidate would also gain considerable experience and training in microsurgery.

There is a monthly plastic surgery clinical meeting, a regular audit programme and a teaching and education programme that the appointee would be actively involved in.   The Specialist Nurse Practitioner runs a suturing course for both undergraduate and post graduate students.

Continuing Professional Development The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Role Planning

Weekend working will consist of clinical activities that are scheduled in advance and reviewed where required as work schedules are reviewed, taking account of service needs.

On call Commitments This role does not require participation in the on-call rota.
