### Job summary

A post is available from August 2026 for six months initially with the possibility of an extension of a further 6 months.

This is a great opportunity to gain experience in thoracic surgery. It is suitable for all levels but would particularly suit a more experienced trainee who wants to gain experience in VATS, RATS and higher co-morbidity cases. Previous incumbents have gone to national training schemes or to consultant posts in the UK and abroad. Consultants at this hospital are authors of recently published textbooks of thoracic surgery and are research and audit active. The successful candidate will be expected to be fully involved in these activities.

### Main duties of the job

*To participate fully in all aspects of the training and assessment programme, this will follow the requirements of PMETB curricula.

*To maintain the necessary records of training/logbook, and to participate in the formal annual assessment, and any other assessment arranged with the consultants

*To attend all relevant clinical and educational meetings

*To take part in the out of hours rota, and ensure that there is always adequate cover

*To undertake such other duties e.g., preparation of rotas, audit information or other administrative or organisational duties as required by the consultants.

*To participate in the training and education of medical students, junior medical staff, and non-medical staff.

*To provide a professional role model for more junior medical staff, and provide guidance and support, particularly during the out of hours period.

*To ensure that all records are accurately maintained, and appropriate deadlines met.

*To contribute to the smooth running of the department and support developments in practice within the directorate.

*To contribute to the audit programme of the department as directed.

*To observe the terms and conditions identified included with the training programme.

*To observe the Trusts policies and procedures, and clinical protocols

### Experience

**Essential**

- Eligible for GMC registration on application.
- Evidence of achievement of at least ST2 competencies, including, Delivery of good clinical/ acute care, maintaining good medical practice, good relationships and communications with patients, relatives, colleagues, seniors.
- 6-12 months minimum experience in cardiothoracic surgery. Good teaching and training. Professional behaviour and probity
- Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & prioritise clinical need.
- Demonstrates appropriate technical competence and evidence of development of excellent diagnostic skills & judgement. Validated logbook- documentation of surgical exposure to date.
- Judgement under pressure: -Capacity to operate effectively under pressure & remain objective. Aware of own limitations & when to seek help.
- Communications skills: Capacity to communicate effectively & sensitively, able to discuss treatment options in a way which patients can understand. Problem solving:
