### Job overview

The appointment is to commence from August 2026. It is desirable that applicants hold an FRCS (Orth or NS) qualification.  The post does not award a National Training Number, and this post is not recognised as a ‘training post’. Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required at the time of application, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required. The duties of this post are appropriate to an individual recently awarded the Certificate of Completion of Training in either Trauma and Orthopaedics or Neurosurgery but can be considered for someone who is working towards CCT. The contract of Employment will be held with Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

This post would offer combined Ortho/Neuro and paediatric spine fellowship experience to cover breadth of spinal surgery across 3 Hospitals in Sheffield.  Appointees can discuss a flexible timetable with fellowship supervisors for rotations in Northern General, Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Sheffield Children’s Hospital over a 12-month period.

### Main duties of the job

The Senior Clinical Spinal Fellow will be supported by resident doctors and a Clinical Nurse specialist and will have responsibility for the daily care of the patients under the care Spinal Consultants at NGH.  There is an opportunity to attend Theatre and outpatient sessions with neurosurgical (Complex spine) team at Royal Hallamshire hospital and flexible working with the post holder at Sheffield Children’s hospital to attend paediatric clinics and theatre sessions.

## Person Specification

### Research

**Essential**

- Evidence of recent involvement in research and audit related to spinal conditions

**Desirable**

- Recent spinal publications in Peer reviewed journals

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of application
- Basic Medical Degree
- MRCS or equivalent

**Desirable**

- Distinctions, prizes, awards, scholarships. Other degrees
- FRCS (Orth) or FRCS(SN)

### Clinical experience

**Essential**

- ST5+ level of Neurosurgical + Orthopaedic experience (foundation and Core training competencies with a minimum 6 to maximum 72 months spinal surgery experience) / equivalent Overseas Neurosurgical + Orthopaedic experience at ST5+ level
- Minimum 6 months of NHS experience

**Desirable**

- CCT in Orthopaedics or Neurosurgery or equivalent

### Personal attributes

**Essential**

- Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values
- The applicant must demonstrate skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking the English language that enables effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out in the GMC’ good medical practice (2013).

### Teaching and training

**Essential**

- Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors

### Continuous Professional Development

**Essential**

- Evidence of participation in CME/CPD relating to spinal surgery within in the last 12 months

**Desirable**

- Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio
