We also provide inpatient and outpatient treatment of haemato-oncology patients including inpatient chemotherapy up to Level 2 care. Under the direction of the Consultant Haematologists, the SHO will be involved in the clinical work of the Department.  The post would be ideal for those wishing to pursue a career in Haematology or wishing to gain more experience as we offer a broad range of haematology experience including haemato-oncology, red cell and haemoglobinopathies, thrombophilia and anticoagulation, obstetric and paediatric haematology. This is an ongoing post offered for 12-month full time in Haematology in the first instance.  The postholder will provide support to the CT grade doctors in providing excellent care for in patients.   There will be appropriate senior supervision The post holder will be encouraged to attend and participate in outpatient clinics. ### Main duties of the job Working closely with CT grade and Registrar colleagues to support the haematology service and to provide excellent inpatient care of haematology patients. Review of Day unit patients across the three haematology Day units as required and arrange appropriate investigations; ensure all treatments administered as prescribed, keeping accurate documentation. Arrange ward admission of patients as necessary, including acute haematology admissions via A&E; liaise with the registrar appropriately and escalate if necessary. Review of patients with the Consultant Work alongside the CNS team to ensure continuity of care for patients. Attendance in outpatient clinics with consultant supervision, particularly useful if pursuing a career in Haematology. On call duties will be on the SHO rota with appropriate Consultant supervision (currently 1 weekend and 2 weekdays per month) ### Detailed job description and main responsibilities The diagnosis and management of patients suffering from thalassaemia and sickle cell syndromes, and the malignant diseases of the blood, especially lymphoma and myeloma, make up a large proportion of the work in the department.  The Department has special interest in the detection, management and counselling of patients with haemoglobinopathies.  The purpose built George Marsh Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Centre situated at St Ann's Hospital serves as a counselling and screening Centre for haemoglobinopathies in the community and the full-time counsellors based there work closely with the Haematology Department at the North Middlesex Hospital. - Haematology inpatient beds predominantly on Podium 1 Ward (haemato-oncology) and T4 ward (haemoglobinopathies/ benign haematology). Podium 1 Ward is a shared ward with oncology and HIV services, included are dedicated single rooms with en-suite facilities.  This is staffed by appropriate number of chemotherapy trained nurses and supported by the Haematology CNS team. T4 ward is a shared ward with care of the Elderly. The ward is staffed by an appropriate number of nurses competent in looking after patients with haemoglobin disorders and supported by the Red Cell CNS. We expect to be able to offer Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) for our sickle cell patients on the specialised haematology wards soon. - Haematology day case units (1 shared with oncology, 1 for haemoglobinopathy patients offering extended hours, 1 offering assessment and pain relief for a sub-group of frequently presenting patients with difficulty managing predominantly chronic pain problems in sickle cell disease.) The haematology/oncology day  unit is open from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 17:00 and a variety of treatments including administration of blood products, cytotoxic drugs,  bone marrow procedures, venesection, antibiotic therapy and the management of indwelling central venous catheters are undertaken there. The haemoglobinopathy Day Unit offers blood transfusion to patients with thalassaemia and sickle cell disease, including automated exchange blood transfusion.
