### Job overview

Applications are invited for a full time Senior Clinical Fellow post in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will have established leadership and team-working qualities.  He/she will be expected to play an active role in the provision and delivery of healthcare for patients who need treatment for a wide range of non-oncology conditions in the specialty including facial trauma, orthognathic surgery, salivary gland surgery, TMJ replacement surgery and reconstructive surgery for facial skin defects.

The department plays an active role in the established Major Trauma Centre at King’s and therefore a main emphasis of the post will be the provision of Oral & Maxillofacial Trauma services both within and out of normal working hours.

### Main duties of the job

This post would be suitable for any senior OMFS trainee after or towards the end of their regular training.  A dual medical and dental qualification is desirable, whereby a medical qualification is essential.

There are four Specialty Registrar posts and two Senior Clinical Fellow post in the department.

The successful candidate will be expected to be skilled and confident enough to do 2nd on-call on a 1:6 basis during work days and 1:10 for weekends together with a junior colleague with a dental or a medical degree.

The successful candidate will also be expected to cover clinical services across all sites of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will:

- provide a clinical service in conjunction with colleagues and under the direction of OMFS Consultants, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
- be involved in the examination and treatment of new patients in the out-patient clinic and will also assist in review clinics. They will be expected to organise and apply suitable investigations and make common diagnoses and treatment plans / decisions on their own initiative, guided by their responsible Consultant and the Service Lead and at a level appropriate for their experience and knowledge.
- be involved in the management of surgical treatments within the OMFS out-patient clinic and also on the day surgery unit. Some degree of clinical freedom in out-patient clinics and day case surgery lists may be afforded subject to progress and outcome review.
- provide advice to clinicians in hospital and primary care, originating either from telephone calls from external practitioners, other departments, associated clinical professionals or ward referrals. Availability to the Emergency Department to see, assess, diagnose and where appropriate treat urgent cases constitutes part of the on-call clinical commitments of this post.
- be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with patients under your or others’ care and some aspects of the administration of the OMFS department by agreement.
- participate in the risk management process and in clinical audit and other clinical governance activities within the OMFS department and the Trust. Adherence to Caldicott Principles is mandatory.
- participate in the Trust Appraisal Scheme in conjunction with your Supervising Consultant or Clinical Lead, to identify training and development needs. You will be expected to pursue personal and professional development to fulfil Royal College or Competent Authority (GDC, GMC) requirements in CME/ CPD.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Extensive experience in OMFS

**Desirable**

- ALS (or equivalent) within 2 years
- ATLS Certification

### Skills and Knowledge

**Essential**

- Knowledge and experience of Maxillofacial emergenciess including simple fracture treatment, airway management and dento-facial abscesses
- Competent to work without direct supervision where appropriate
- Evidence of participation and active involvement in research / audit projects

**Desirable**

- Teaching the teachers course and certificate
