About the Role We are seeking a highly motivated Transplant Surgery Fellow to join our world-leading team at Harefield Hospital, a center of excellence in heart and lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on experience in advanced transplant surgery and cutting-edge cardiac support therapies.

Key Responsibilities

- Participate in the on-call rota for organ retrieval for transplantation.
- Work closely with transplant physicians, providing surgical advice and support for transplant patients.
- Assist in heart and lung transplant operations under consultant supervision.
- Contribute to surgical management of patients with mechanical circulatory support (VAD, ECMO).
- Lead daily ICU and ward rounds for transplant patients.
- Present cases at weekly multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Support training of junior surgeons in transplant patient care.
- Engage in research activities, aiming for annual publication and conference submissions.

- The Fellow will participate in the surgical management of patients who have undergone a variety of mechanical circulatory support including VAD, and ECMO implantation.
- The Fellow will lead the ICU and ward round every morning for transplant patients.
- The Fellow will present patients for discussion at the weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings following their pre-operative assessment.
- The Fellow will be expected to play an active part in training junior surgeons in transplant patient management.
- The Fellow will be expected and supported to pursue relevant research studies within the Trust’s overall research portfolio, publishing at least 1 paper per year and submitting 1 abstract to an international conference.
- The Fellow will assist with organising and managing the transplant, VAD and short-term MCS databases, transforming these files to more accessible format, facilitating generation of audit and research projects.
- This post is non-resident out of hours, but residence must be within 15 minutes normal drive time from the hospital for on-call duties to be undertaken.

## Person Specification

### Qualifications / Training

**Essential**

- Full GMC registration
- Evidence of at least 3 years’ experience in cardiothoracic surgery
- MRCS, FRCS, or equivalent
- Evidence of at least 3 years’ experience in cardiothoracic surgery

**Desirable**

- Higher medical degree

### Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

**Essential**

- Ability to deal effectively with staff at all levels of the organisation
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills in line with the Trust’s Core Behaviours

### Surgical Competence and Experience

**Essential**

- Median sternotomy
- Establishment of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB)
- Systematic haemostasis and closure of the chest
- 1st assistant to Consultant Surgeon

**Desirable**

- Evidence of at least 1 year attached to a transplant unit
- Technically competent to perform routine cardiac surgical procedures as the primary operator (supervised/unsupervised)
- Familiarity with donor optimisation and donor retrieval for intra-thoracic transplantation
