**Fixed term contract from 6th July 2026 to 31st July 2027**

The Consultant body contains current FRCEM examiners, ATLS, APLS & ALS instructors and all of whom are level 1 and some level 2 US trained. The evidence speaks for itself we have a proven track record in our long term middle grades successfully becoming consultants via the this advertised process, and have the full support of the department, they would be happy to talk to you about this informally. There will be training and teaching  for all successful applicants and there will be a designated Consultant supervisor for the duration of the contract, which will include regular 1-1’s and access to educations resources.

From a clinical perspective these posts will participate in the 24-hour Emergency Department rota. The rotation is initially offered on a fixed term contract for 12 months.

### Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities

- To assist in the provision of a safe, effective and efficient Emergency Medicine Service.
- To be actively involved in audit and quality issues and to support the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme and continuing professional development responsibilities for which time is allocated in the job plan.
- To participate in the Directorate's clinical meetings.
- To contribute to the ED shop floor cover.

Medical Education & Teaching

- Participate in the professional supervision, management, support and teaching of Emergency Department Trainees.

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance

- Participate in the Clinical Audit programme of the Emergency Department in accordance with Unit and Trust policy.
- Comply with the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes as stipulated by the Directorate and Medical Directors from time to time.

Continuing Professional Development

- Participate in continuing professional development at local and national level.
- Implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice.
- Prepare and participate in appraisal in accordance with Trust policy.

Policy Planning and Management

- Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care.
- Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines
- Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Directorate and participate in the strategic planning of the service.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is full-time and is part of the Emergency Department Team. The successful applicants will join the Queen Elizabeth Hospital treating a large range of acutely unwell patients.

The post is full-time and is entirely within the Emergency Department at QEH for the contract duration.

The successful applicant will work in a EWTD compliant rota, working shifts across 7 days including days,  twilights, evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays.

The QEH site opened in March 2001. Although still fairly new, rising demand has meant that we are looking at way to expand and redevelop the department. The ED at QEH is amongst one busiest in London, seeing in excess of 150,000 new patients annually. The workload provides an opportunity to see a wide variety of acute medical and surgical problems.

Duties of the post

To help ensure the smooth running of the services provided by the Emergency Department. To work with other staff in the Emergency Department to ensure provision of a safe and effective emergency service to the local population through clinical work, teaching, audit, and management. To help the Emergency Department meet National Quality Indicators in emergency care.

ED Consultants’ are present, with supervision and support available from 0800-2200 every day

## Person Specification

### Clinical Audit

**Essential**

- Understanding of principles of medical audit.
- Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills.
- Evidence of participation in audit project

**Desirable**

- Should have evidence of current ongoing CPD and annual appraisal

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full registration with UK General Medical Council and a Licence to Practice
- Current provider status in at least one of the following advanced life support courses ATLS or ALS or other recognised equivalent course

**Desirable**

- Should hold a relevant postgraduate qualification/diploma e.g. MRCEM
- Current provider status in 2 or more advanced life support courses ATLS or ALS
- Instructor status in ATLS or ALS

- Ability to prioritise tasks and show effective time management
- Enthusiastic learner with good time keeping, reliable
- Familiar with current structure of health service and knowledgeable about recent initiatives and changes

### Clinical Experience

**Essential**

- Completed at least three years full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent) at least one of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term appointment in a relevant specialty
- Shall have at least 12 months, full time (or its equivalent) experience of working in a Consultant led ED or have demonstrable, equivalent experience and competencies

- Demonstrates developing an area of interest in Emergency Medicine

### Teaching Experience

**Essential**

- Experience of undergraduate teaching

### Physical Requirements

**Essential**

- Physically/Mentally fit to pass occupational health assessment.
