### Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the department for full time, ACC qualified, Senior Clinical Coders, with enthusiasm and motivation to join our extremely busy Clinical Coding Department. The post holder will have responsibility for the clinical coding of all acute specialties, by abstracting clinical data from the patients records and translating it into diagnostic (ICD10) and procedure (OPCS) coding classifications.

With a flexible approach to work, the post-holder will work as part of a team to meet tight deadlines. The Trust operates an Agile Working Policy, offering both on-site and remote working opportunities.

A good knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology is essential as is a good standard of education..

The post involves some interaction and collaboration with clinicians in all specialties, ensuring that procedures and diagnosis are correct and agree with national standards.

This role requires an organised approach to the workload and the ability to work in a very busy environment where a high degree of accuracy with attention to detail and experience of working to tight deadlines is paramount.

There is the facility to work from home for a period of time, via remote access.

Successful applicants that hold the ACC qualification can expect a ‘10%’ uplift in addition to their Band 5 salary.

The accuracy of clinical coding activity is vitally important for secondary care Trusts, not only to secure the correct income but also to inform decision making regarding the future of clinical services. Coded activity is also used by secondary users within the NHS, Government, and external bodies, who produce statistics such as standardised mortality rates which monitor clinical outcomes and key quality indicators.

The post-holder will be responsible for the clinical coding of inpatient and day-case episodes across all specialties provided at Barts Health hospitals.

The post involves liaising with clinicians and clinical teams on a regular basis to verify data recorded in patient case-notes and on electronic systems.

The post holder will contribute positively towards the development of the novice clinical coders, will act as mentor to and assist in the training of less experienced coders.

## Person Specification

### Skills

**Essential**

- Excellent communication and presentation skills - both verbal and written.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts to diverse groups.
- Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Act as a mentor for less experienced coders.
- Understanding of Data Quality and Caldicott.
- Thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of:
- Relevant legislation, health-sector processes, policies, and current strategies.
- National NHS Contract (relevant to field).

### Experience

**Essential**

- Attended Refresher Training and speciality workshops.
- Ability to code a minimum of 6 specialty areas.

**Desirable**

- Previous experience using various Patient Administration Systems
- Previous experience using encoders

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Educated to GSCE level or equivalent, including Maths and English.
- Accredited Clinical Coding qualification and/or ability to pass internal Band 5 Assessment.

**Desirable**

- Computer course. E.g. ECDL
- Certificate in Anatomy & Physiology
- Medical Terminology qualification
