An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, experienced, and enthusiastic HCPC registered Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our welcoming and dedicated Blood Sciences team at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. You will be working with the Bio-Rad IH1000 in centre with a specialist Burns Unit, offers a Surgical Neonatal Service with a Foetal Medicine Unit. You will be an efficient and flexible member of the Blood Transfusion laboratory team.

You will be responsible for a team of BMS' and Associate Practitioners, to deliver a medical laboratory service which achieves the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, and resource management within the Trust. They are responsible for sections of the diagnostic work and support services, ensuring proper organisation and functioning of the section and their staff, directing those staff within the section, and ensuring correct procedures and protocols are carried out. They are also responsible for the teaching and development of staff currently in Blood Transfusion; to maintain at all times the required high standards and quality; to maintain an up to date knowledge of the Chelsea and Westminster Blood Transfusion Laboratory and current working practices within the diagnostic lab.

A minimum of 4 years post registration experience in a Blood Transfusion laboratory is required. Completion of the Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice is essential. A IBMS Specialist Diploma will be an advantage.

### Main duties of the job

- Maintain documentation and electronic records in compliance with Trust standards, promoting adherence to policies and procedures among staff.
- Identify and report clinical and non-clinical risks, ensuring appropriate actions are taken according to the Trust's risk management policy.
- Plan and prioritize the scientific workload daily, providing a comprehensive laboratory service to patients and staff.
- Ensure understanding and implementation of standard operational and health and safety policies by all staff.
- Oversee the maintenance, quality control, and record keeping of laboratory instruments and equipment.
- Adapt to new methodologies and practices as needed, while actively participating in quality assurance and audits.
- Generate and update standard operating procedures, validate and authorise reports in accordance with local policies.
- Assist in the development of new techniques and provide scientific advice as a resource internally and externally.
- Stay informed of current developments in relevant areas of responsibility.
- Responsible for the maintenance and calibration of equipment when working autonomously.

### Experience

**Essential**

- Knowledge of all aspects of specialist subject
- Ability to develop and write policies and procedures (e.g. Standard Operating Procedures), relating to specialty section
- Evidence of experience of quality management systems, audits and document control
- Previous experience in a large busy pathology laboratory
- Evidence of a good understanding of the use and interpretation of quality control

**Desirable**

- Experience of Audit assessment

### Education/qualifications

**Essential**

- MSc, or IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma, or any of the IBMS higher qualifications
- 3 years practical experience at band 6 or equivalent, post specialist HCPC registration in relevant discipline

**Desirable**

- Management qualification or relevant experience
- Quality Management qualification
