To be an efficient, flexible member of the laboratory and wider Pathology service providing a consistently high quality and professional service.

Assist with managing the day-to-day operations of a specific area of a laboratory service, at the hub or spoke laboratory, as an integral element of Pathology. To be responsible for providing specialist knowledge, alongside technical expertise to aid in the training and development of technical staff.

To maintain competence to practice and to improve professional expertise through engagement in Continual Professional Development (CPD)

To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality.

### Main duties of the job

Specialist Knowledge – Training Lead

To provide and co-ordinate specialist clinical technical services to patients that may include research and audit samples

To undertake day-to-day management of a section within the laboratory under the direction of the line manager.

Contributes to providing a professional clinical laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department.

To provide the necessary training and supervision to staff within the section.

To maintain, monitor and develop documentation for competence assessment in all areas. Maintain training matrix and ProfilerLIve systems for real time training and competence updates.

Work in compliance with local health and safety rules to ensure a safe working environment. Adhere to department, directorate and Board Health and Safety policies (including COSHH, Risk assessments and Standard Operating Procedures) and to report any non-compliances to the Service Manager or Technical Lead.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be proficient an all designated areas of diagnostic work within the department and to provide a comprehensive and appropriate laboratory service to patients and staff.

To undertake a wide range of diagnostic tests and screening procedures through to initial interpretation.

To ensure that test procedures are carried out according to SOP’s, assess that other junior staff are competent and participate in their regular review and update.

To maintain and develop documentation relating to training eg SOPs, training plans, competence assessment documents and tasks for generic and specialist portfolios. To organise and encourage staff to take a keen interest in the training of junior members of staff.

To document completion of competence assessments in a training matrix for each member of staff and review regularly to keep this up to date as possible. Oversee Mandatory training in order to achieve departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

### Applicant requirements

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

## Person Specification

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Bsc Biomedical Science or equivalent
- Msc Biomedical Science or equivalent
- Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) Specialist Diploma in Cellular Pathology
- Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Substantial post HCPC Registration experience in an NHS clinical Cellular Pathology department

**Desirable**

- IBMS Certificate in Expert Practice in Training
- Evidence of previous training lead experience
