We are seeking an individual who is highly motivated, proactive, and enthusiastic to join our friendly and dedicated team in the Cellular Pathology Department.

You should be a good team worker with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills and be able to prioritise tasks. Effective communication is essential. You should have a methodical and organised approach to work and be able to work under your own initiative once fully trained. in area of work.

Must hold Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration as a Biomedical Scientist.

Provide a high-quality, reliable, and efficient cellular pathology diagnostic service for patients.

Work in a laboratory setting adhering to quality standards such as UKAS ISO 15189.

Significant investment has been utilised over the previous year to advance technologies such as Vantage tracking, SMART automation, Digital Pathology and a new LIMS. The successful candidate will be at the forefront of these advances within Cellular Pathology.

### Main duties of the job

The post will be based in the Cellular Pathology Department at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, Stoke-On-Trent

To be an efficient and flexible member of the laboratory team providing a high-quality diagnostic service through specialist scientific and technical activities; handle specimen receipt, booking in, tissue transfer, perform tissue embedding, microtomy (cutting sections), frozen sections, operate and monitor automated immunohistochemistry (IHC) and special diagnostic procedures

Responsible as a Senior Biomedical Scientist for the main laboratory area, to manage and co-ordinate the day-to-day technical activities of the laboratory

Specialist duties in training require the individual to work with the training team to identify, plan, and facilitate training and development needs for all laboratory staff

To deliver tutorials, slide sessions, and in-house lectures

To work within and maintain Standard Operational Policies (SOPs), training records and documentation systems

Perform equipment problem solving and maintenance

Follow strict Health & Safety policices

To maintain competence to practice and to improve professional expertise through engagement in Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

### Personal Qualities

**Essential**

- Must participate in the required rota pattern for the department.
- Prepared to work flexibly, including participating out of routine hours service arrangements when required to do so.
- Ability and willingness to fulfil the travel requirements of the post if/as relevant – primary place of work as per JD but occasionally may be reasonably asked to work at another site where the Trust has responsibility for Pathology Services.

### Knowledge and Skills

**Essential**

- A minimum of 5 years post-registration practical experience of working in relevant Pathology discipline in a busy laboratory environment.
- One or more sub-specialised analytical or clinical areas
- Supervising / managing staff.
- Training a range of ‘students’ e.g. medical , scientific and support staff
- Pathology IT systems
- Participation in audit and service development projects.
- Active liaison with clinicians and healthcare professionals.
- Working in a team and alone Intermediate and accurate IT skills.
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
- Effectively apply skills and knowledge, work with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and contribute to their review
- Work within safe systems of work and report any deficiencies in those systems.

**Desirable**

- Experience of working in an acute NHS Trust
- Ability to establish and maintain effective Pathology networks with internal and external colleagues.

### Essential Qualifications

**Essential**

- BSc, Registration and Specialist
- MSc, HSD or alternative
- Registered Biomedical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- Evidence of Continued Professional Development (CPD).
- Knowledge of relevant laboratory data management systems and policies. Understands the importance of data integrity and confidentiality
- Knowledge of relevant quality procedures.
- Health and Safety knowledge.
- Up-to-date knowledge of national Clinical Pathology Accreditation standards and their application (as relevant to the speciality).

**Desirable**

- Attended formal management course
