### Job overview

As a Health Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist, to lead and supervise the day-to-day delivery of a diagnostic service of Clinical Biochemistry, which includes the Automation section (2 x Cobas 8000 and P612), Immunology (Phadia 250), HbA1c's (TOSOH G11), EQA section and Osmo1. To work closely with senior staff in Haematology, Blood Bank and specimen reception to ensure the smooth running of the blood sciences service.

They will be expected to maintain competency and specialist knowledge for the work therein. The post holder will be a laboratory specialist lead and lead a team. They discharge these duties either working alone to departmental, national or professional guidance and policies or as leader of a laboratory team to implement policies and procedures.

### Main duties of the job

To provide advanced Biomedical Science technical support within a section by providing training, advice, technical development, troubleshooting and supervision.

To supervise and coordinate validation and verification as and when required.

Day to day management of staffing and operational duties within the Biochemistry section.

To oversee stock control and ordering of reagents and consumables in all sections in Clinical Biochemistry.

Oversee training to BMS and all grades of support staff, updating training documents, and ensuring training is undertaken according to the training policy and training programmes of the department to maintain IBMS training approval and UKAS standards.

To work cross site with the other seniors to support with harmonisation for best patient outcomes. Working on the other sites (Cross site working)  may be required

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Significant experience working as a Band 6 in a Clinical Biochemistry Laboratory
- Is able to actively participate in the development of new methods and the commissioning of new equipment for the department.
- Experience of Pathology QMS and UKAS accreditation assessments
- Experience of some level of staff management with formal training

**Desirable**

- Experience working as a Band 7 BMS in a Clinical Biochemistry laboratory
- Experience of using complex Biochemistry analytical platforms
- Human Resource management experience and skills

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- An MSc in Biomedical Sciences degree (or working towards an MSc), or Fellowship of the IBMS or equivalent experience
- HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist
- IBMS Specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent qualification or experience

**Desirable**

- Studying for or willingness to study for a Management course
- Membership of professional body such as IBMS

### Communications and interpersonal skills

**Essential**

- Able to understand and communicate complex issues and concepts with colleagues
- Organise the training and instruction of other staff.
- Meet and negotiate with suppliers regarding new and existing goods and services
