### JOB SUMMARY

### KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide an effective and efficient support service to the Ward Sister / Charge Nurse within the directorate by contributing to the general management and maintenance of the ward/department environment. This includes administrative support, housekeeping, infection prevention and control, and compliance with fire and health and safety policies.

Stock and Equipment Control

Maintain the ward ordering system to ensure adequate supplies are available at all times.

Work closely with other wards across the Adult Services Directorate to minimise waste and share surplus stock or resources when appropriate.

Communicate with suppliers and the Supplies Department to resolve stock issues and ensure value for money.

Store and rotate stock correctly to reduce wastage.

Record and maintain asset registers for ward equipment.

Order and manage specialist equipment (e.g. beds, mattresses) as directed.

Assist with the cleaning, decontamination, and basic maintenance of ward equipment.

Fire Safety

Act as Fire Warden for the ward/department, ensuring staff are aware of their fire safety responsibilities.

Carry out daily and weekly fire safety checks in line with Trust policy and maintain accurate fire safety records.

Coordinate and document fire drills, ensuring outcomes and learning points are shared and acted upon.

Report fire hazards immediately and support actions to reduce risks.

Assist in the safe evacuation of patients, visitors, and staff in the event of an emergency.

Audit and Quality Monitoring

Support patient satisfaction surveys and ward-level audits, including hygiene, nutrition, mattress use, environmental standards, and fire safety.

Maintain accurate records for inspections, audits, risk assessments, fire safety logs.

Infection Prevention and Control

Liaise with support services to maintain high standards of ward cleanliness and hygiene.

Adhere to infection control and hygiene procedures to ensure a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Support fit-testing arrangements and maintain accurate records for respiratory protective equipment.

General Support

Assist the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in preparing for internal and external inspections (e.g. Fire Safety, RQIA, IPC).

Safeguard patients’ belongings and valuables in accordance with Trust policy.

Report accidents and incidents promptly, and support investigations by providing accurate information.

Assist in the induction of new staff to the ward/department.

Any other reasonable duties requested, including meeting coordination, agenda preparation, document circulation, and minute-taking

Participate in the Trust Appraisal Process and attend in-service training programs as required.

Helping to reduce paper waste by minimising printing/copying and reducing water usage, reporting faults and heating/cooling concerns promptly and minimising travel.
