Are you passionate about fitness, rehabilitation, and making a real difference? We’re looking for a motivated and dynamic Health & Fitness Instructor to join our innovative Rehabilitation Therapy Service (RTS) at Broadmoor Hospital.

This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to work in a high secure setting, where you will support and encourage patients with acute and enduring mental illness to engage in meaningful physical activity as part of their recovery journey and overall wellbeing.

As part of our dedicated Health & Fitness team, you will deliver engaging, structured, and patient-focused activities across a wide range of environments, including:

Ward-based gyms

Main Fitness Suite

Indoor Sports Hall

Outdoor 3G Polymeric Multi-Use Games Area

Fitness Studio

You’ll play a key role in creating inclusive, motivating, and therapeutic activity programmes that promote physical health, build confidence, and enhance social engagement.

This role also offers the opportunity to step into leadership on shift, where you will support, supervise, and develop colleagues, ensuring activities are delivered safely, effectively, and to a high standard. The successful candidate must have a minimum of Level 2 Gym Instructor qualification.

### Main duties of the job

Take a lead role in providing day-to-day support, guidance, and leadership within the Health and Fitness Department, working closely with a Band 5 Supervisor to ensure high-quality service delivery.

Bring creativity and innovation by designing and delivering new and engaging health and fitness activities, responsive to patient interests, age, culture, and backgrounds — including both individual and group programmes.

Work collaboratively with Dietitians and Physiotherapists to plan and deliver targeted sessions that support patients with physical limitations, mobility challenges, and weight management goals.

Act as a positive role model and key resource for the team, actively participating in and contributing to all patient sessions to maximise engagement and therapeutic benefit.

Ensure the team maintains high standards of clinical documentation, supporting staff to record accurate, timely, and professional notes within RiO, in line with service expectations and timeframes.

Support the monitoring of patient progress by ensuring regular, high-quality reporting, including CPA and LATCH updates, capturing achievements, engagement, and areas for development.

Take responsibility for maintaining a safe and compliant environment, ensuring that all daily, weekly, and quarterly checks and procedures are completed accurately and on time.

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- To have a knowledge of the application of Risk assessment and management
- To have a working knowledge of the importance of grading therapeutic / sporting activities to meet patients’ needs.
- Evidence in mental health Awareness

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of wider NHS papers or policies or CQUIN’s relevant to Mental Health
- Applied Knowledge of wider NHS papers or policies
- To have a working knowledge of a manager duty of candour
- To have an understanding of the Recovery and Social Inclusion in mental health.

### Experience

**Essential**

- Experience of working with patients in a health care setting
- Experience in evaluating patients’ skill level and needs.
- Experience as a band 3 in a relevant patient care NHS post
- Demonstrates the ability to role model, empower and motivate staff.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Microsoft Teams)

**Desirable**

- Experience of working with patients with forensic mental illness and personality disorder
- Experience of line managing staff
- To have experience dealing with challenging people
- Experience in writing local operational protocols or session protocols in collaboration with others.
- Experience in leadership of teams of staff

### Qualifications and Training

**Essential**

- Good general education with 2 or more CSE, GCSE or O’ Levels
- To have a relevant trade or skill NVQ, City and Guilds, BTEC
- Management/Leadership training course Level 3
- To have minimum of a relevant sports or gym qualification (Level 2 gym Instructor)

**Desirable**

- Level III Award in Education and Training
- Motivation and Engagement Training
- Adult Education qualification – PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
