Under the direction of the Research Nurse/Research Practitioner, the Research Healthcare Assistant will provide technical, practical and clinical support in trial related procedures for patients involved in research studies. Other trial related duties will include data management and other administrative tasks as directed by senior research staff, in accordance with regulatory guidance, Trust Policies and Standard Operating Procedures.

This role will be primarily based in St Austell Community Hospital, but applicants should have the ability to travel to sites across Cornwall.

### Main duties of the job

Clinical Activities

- Assist with the clinical care of research participants in accordance with the specifications of each research study
- With training and support, screen and identify patients suitable for clinical research using inclusion and exclusion criteria, NHS records, screening clinics, visiting wards and outpatients and using Trust IT systems and databases
- Support in the preparation and set-up for patient clinics as necessary, ensuring the environment is suitable for patient care and research processes, recognising the importance of privacy, dignity and diversity.
- Be responsible for the safe and accurate collection of research data through clinical procedures such as venepuncture, history taking, standard observations (height, weight, BP, RR, HR, oxygen saturations, temperature) and other assessments such as ECG, physical examinations, disease specific outcome measures, questionnaires, rated scales, qualitative interviewing as required by the protocol
- Support in the monitoring of treatment toxicity/side effects by reporting any abnormal clinical values to a senior member of the team

## Person Specification

### Skills and Aptitude

**Essential**

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Relevant clinical skills e.g Venepuncture, ECG, or willingness to undertake required training
- Ability to collect accurate standard observations e.g. BP, HR, RR, SPO2, temp, height, weight, blood sugar

### Education / Qualifications and Relevant Experience

**Essential**

- NVQ Level 3 in Healthcare or equivalent
- Good level of general education (5 GCSEs grades A-C including English and Maths)

**Desirable**

- Experience of using databases and data input/extraction
