### Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team (MDT) within the Emergency Department, delivering behavioural safety support seven days per week, including unsocial hours and public holidays. The role focuses on providing therapeutic engagement, behavioural support, and de‑escalation interventions for patients presenting with behavioural distress, agitation, or acute mental health symptoms in the Emergency Department.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A key function of the role is to support ED colleagues in managing behavioural risk safely and effectively, contributing actively to dynamic risk assessment discussions alongside Emergency Department clinicians. Where a patient requires formal psychiatric assessment, the post holder will escalate appropriately to the Core 24 Liaison Psychiatry team.

The role also carries an important responsibility in promoting parity of esteem between physical and mental health within the Emergency Department environment, ensuring compassionate, person‑centred care for all patients.

This position does not include undertaking specialist mental health assessments or diagnostic formulation. All psychiatric assessments and decisions regarding admission remain the responsibility of Core 24 Liaison Psychiatry and the Emergency Department Consultant in Charge.

### Skills

**Essential**

- Able to manage and/or escalate difficult situations
- Ability to recognise behavioural escalation and respond within defined boundaries
- Ability to apply trauma‑informed communication
- Basic computer skills including ability to use Microsoft Word and Electronics
- Able to work as an effective team member and be able to handle team dynamics

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Knowledge of behavioural safety and de‑escalation approaches
- Understanding of reasonable adjustments for people with learning disabilities and autism
- Awareness of cognitive impairment presentations (delirium, dementia, confusion)
- Understanding of trauma‑informed practice

### Experience

**Essential**

- Experience of supporting individuals in distress or agitation
- Experience of supporting newly qualified RMNs

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Registered Mental Health Nurse on the NMC register
- Evidence of continuing professional development
- Completed Standards of student supervision and assessment (SSSA)
