### Job summary

GYOGOG05 Professor / Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist University Hospital Galway for 18.5 hours per week and University of Galway for 18.5 hours.

This is an appointment to the HSE West & North West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to University Hospital Galway for 18.5 hours per week and University of Galway for 18.5 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

### Main Duties of the Job

This is a joint appointment on a 50/50 basis to the University of Galway and to the RHA West /North West, HSE. The purpose of the post is to provide a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist for GUH and Professor of Obstetrics & Gynaecology for University of Galway.

Clinical

- To attend at Galway University Hospitals at such times as may be determined by the HSE West / North West, and in emergencies as required, and to remain in attendance thereat as long as his/her services are required.
- To attend at any clinic or site maintained by the HSE West and North West within the RHA catchment as appropriate and to provide either thereat or in the appropriate hospital such diagnostic, treatment or consultation service as may be appropriate.
- To attend as Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist when required in any hospital or institution managed by the HSE West / North West.
- To alternate with the other Consultants in the Department and to act for them as required during short-term absences including weekend and off-duty leave.
- To provide lectures as required in the hospitals for student nurses, other nurses in training and other staff.
- To examine any person referred to him/her by the appropriate HSE West / North West for examination and report and to furnish to the HSE West and North West a full report of his/her findings on such examination, unless the person referred informs the officer that he/she objects to the examination or to the submission of such report, in which event the officer shall notify the HSE West and North West concerned.
- The person holding this post at Galway University Hospital is required to support the principle that the care of the patient comes first at all times and will approach their work with the flexibility and enthusiasm necessary to make this principle a reality for every patient to the greatest possible degree.

### Information about the organisation

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Galway University Hospital (GUH) provides general clinical services in Obstetrics & Gynaecology to the Galway city region and to surrounding areas of Co Galway, Co Mayo, Co Clare and Co Roscommon. It is also a tertiary level centre for the West / North West (W/NW) Regional Health Area (RHA) of the HSE which includes a large geographical area of the west and north west region of Ireland with an approximate denominator population of 1 million people.

There are 5 hospitals within the W/NW RHA providing services in Obstetrics & Gynaecology of which GUH is the only Model 4 Hospital and is the central referral site for specialist services. The specialist services provided at GUH on a referral basis include fetal medicine, maternal disorders in pregnancy, diabetes in pregnancy, reproductive medicine, gynaecological oncology, urogynaecology, paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, colposcopy and menopause care. GUH is a designated National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) referral centre for gynaecological oncology.

There is a Level 2 Neonatal Unit at GUH and a Level 1 Unit at the other 4 hospitals. There is a regional placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) service based on referral to GUH. Specialist perinatal pathology services for the region are provided at GUH. All of the Obstetrics & Gynaecology services, and allied maternity and infant services, within the W/NW RHA and the 5 hospitals are managed in an integrated way under the governance of the Women’s and Children’s Network. There is a well developed regional quality and patient safety structure.

### Benefits

The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023. Academic Professor Salary Scales from 1st June 2026:

€292,798 €308,637 €325,330 €334,129 €342,928 €351,728

Incremental credit is awarded in respect of previous experience at Consultant level.

Pro Rata if appropriate University Hospital Galway for 18.5 hours per week and University of Galway for 18.5 hours
