## Job Content

### Job overview

The General Surgery Department delivers emergency and elective services at Southmead Hospital.  The consultant surgeons provide a General Surgery service primarily but not exclusively to the Trust’s catchment population including a 24-hour continuous emergency service.  Emergency vascular surgery is undertaken by a city-wide vascular rota.

The Department of General Surgery at Southmead includes general surgery, specialist upper and lower intestinal surgery, endocrine surgery, and laparoscopic bariatric surgery and transplant surgery.

The Upper GI Unit comprises 7 general surgeons. This includes 4 specialist Bariatric surgeons undertaking the full range of surgery, including revision surgery. There is also endoscopy including endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (training not available at present).

### Main duties of the job

The job involves working as a senior fellow supervising the bariatric team; ward rounds of bariatric inpatients and two bariatric outpatient clinics in a week (one new patients, one consent and follow up).

Currently we have four bariatric surgeons in an established unit with national reputation as well as three UGI surgeons who do not perform bariatric surgery.

This gives an opportunity for training in bariatric surgery two theatre lists per week. The fellow will have plenty of opportunities to perform general surgical procedures like cholecystectomy surgery as desired. The fellow will present the weekly bariatric MDT cases.  Every week we have grand round on Tuesday followed by bariatric MDT where we discuss all our bariatric patients.  Fellow is expected to supervise juniors in audits to improve quality of care and present in our monthly clinical governance meetings.

They will need to be involved in research supporting clinical studies to be presented in meetings and published in journals.  Attend national meetings such as BOMMS and represent the team.  Wednesday mornings are normally admin time and Friday work finishes after the morning bariatric ward round allowing travel time.  The post includes a full slot on the registrar on call rota.
