### Job overview

The Portering operative will work as an essential part of the UHB team. The focus of the role is to support the Facilities team with non-clinical tasks in the Portering, Reception and Postal departments. Staff will need to cover all service tasks as required and to cover absences of others. To provide an effective and friendly support service to patients, visitors and staff at all times, whilst giving a comprehensive Reception, Portering and Reception service to the UHB across the sites.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

### Main duties of the job

The transport of patients between wards and departments in means of wheelchair, trolley.

General moving, delivery and collection duties relevant to the area of work, which may include driving duties.

Collection and delivery of  blood products (Within UHB and departmental agreed procedures).

Removal and replacing of empty medical gas cylinders, fitting of flow meters in accordance with the appropriate procedure.

Conveying deceased to the mortuary, accepting deceased from other hospitals within the UHB and community deaths in accordance with the appropriate procedure.

Departmental Portering duties relevant to the department being worked in and consistent with Portering and Postal duties.

Collect cardboard, electrical, metal, furniture etc. and deliver to agreed central area.

Covering desk duties subject to overall departmental needs.

Respond to emergency calls as directed.

To provide ‘on the job’ demonstration new staff.

Develop and maintain an understanding of UHB and department policies / protocols ensuring full compliance at all times of the UHB

Confidentiality Policy whilst performing duties.

Assisting in the setting up of Decontamination Tent should the need arise.

Requests to assist in emergency situations will be less frequent and may include the following: fire, missing patient and children, major Incident alerts, trauma calls, etc. These ad-hoc requests will require the post holder to make an adjustment to their normal duties prioritising their work as necessary.

Collection and delivery of specimens, results and blood products (Within UHB and departmental agreed procedures).

Removal and replacing of empty medical gas cylinders, including the fitting of flow meters in accordance with the appropriate procedure.

Conveying deceased to the mortuary, accepting deceased from other hospitals within the UHB and community deaths and assist with patient viewing in accordance with the appropriate procedure.

To be vigilant and security conscious while on the UHB site working closely with the security department.

Develop and maintain an understanding of UHB and department policies/ protocols ensuring full compliance at all times of the UHB

Confidentiality Policy whilst performing duties.

Assisting with the safe passage of people in emergency situations, helping to direct and signpost in conjunction with the service lead.

Requests may be made via telephone, radio, bleep or verbally (person to person) requests may be made several times a day and may change the normal flow of work but they are a general part of the working day.
