### Job overview

The post holder will provide and maintain a flexible, dedicated, comprehensive support service to departments of the  Health Board, under the direction of Portering Coordinator / Portering Shift Leader, enabling both clinical and non-clinical  departments to function effectively.
- Undertake a wide range of routine portering duties including moving and handling, in line with portering  department and general Health Board policies and procedures, with a commitment to customer care, following on  the job training.
- Work as part of a team to provide an efficient portering services to the Health Board, contributing to first class  customer service to all users of the Health Board.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Planning and Design
- To transfer patients, medical equipment and associated medical sundries as delegated by the line management by use of bed,  chair, trolley etc.
- transfer furniture and assist in relocating equipment during office relocations and or new developments, including disposal where  appropriate Improvement, Monitoring, Policy/Service Development
- Ensure compliance with written procedures for all aspects of Portering Services, these forming the basis of Portering Service Standards and induction training work towards attaining NVQ qualification.  Communication.
- Use a degree of initiative and deal with routine enquiries under a wide variety of subjects and work practices and procedures. Staff  also deal with non-routine enquiries and have the ability to be guided by supervisors, good practice and procedures in both areas.  Supervisors are generally available for reference and all enquiries.
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with patients, visitors, colleagues and other staff using telephone, radio and ‘bleep’, as  appropriate, in addition to face-to-face communication. Escort patients bereaved relatives to the mortuary as and when required
- Ensure that the expectations of service users are met through the compliance with the Portering Service standards.
- In the absence of supervisor to answer any telephone calls, recording details of requests for delegation by Portering Coordinator /  Shift Leader.  Operational
- Distribute/collect and dirty linen / laundry (including soiled and infected) to designated locations
- Collect, transfer hospital refuse and controlled waste (including general, clinical, sharps boxes, limbs and cytoxic waste) to  appropriate disposal points in accordance with Health Board procedures, policies and appropriate competency training
- Transportation of controlled drugs in accordance with Health Board procedures and statutory guidelines.
- Transportation of patient’s meal containers.
- Collection and distribution of patients’ hospital notes, internal mail and sorting, franking of external mail in preparation for collection by an external provider.
- Collect, distribute and document specimens / bloods for pathology, as and when required, ensuring their security at all times.  Compulsory training is essential for this role.
- Provide the exchange, transfer of manifold and gas cylinders and document a record of the usage. Report any identifiable faults.
- Undertake driving duties using vans/ambulances
- Undertake hospital mortuary duties in the transfer and documentation of the deceased, and assist the police, ambulance and  undertakers to gain access to the mortuary, in the absence of mortuary personnel.
- Assist in the search for missing patients
- Undertake patrol rounds locking up / unlocking of hospital doors and windows.
- In the event of the baby tag alarm being activated - assist in accordance with the hospital policy
- Participate in emergency procedures through compliance with portering training including:  Fire  Major incident  Air ambulance  Medical emergencies
- Daily receipt, collection sorting and delivery of general and medical stores.
- Assist ambulance crews in loading and off-loading of patients.
- Undertake cleaning and inspection for the safe operation of stretcher, wheelchairs and other portering equipment and be  responsible for the safe and effective utilisation of equipment used by the Portering Service. Management, Training & Leadership
- Attend training as required to meet statutory and service needs within the Portering Service.
- Assist and provide guidance to newly appointed porters including demonstrating duties during the local induction phase, in  awareness and familiarisation of the services provided and the processes that enable the service to function effectively, safely and  securely.

## Person Specification

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Good standard of general education covering a number of topics
- Understanding of customer services within the hospital environment

**Desirable**

- Fire Wardens Certificate
- Previous experience working in a portering role or role involving working with members of the general public
