### Main duties of the job

To provide and maintain a professional, efficient, effective and timely service to patients, visitors and other departments that will contribute to achieving high quality patient care.

To Ensure the service supports the clinical care of patients and respects the privacy & dignity of every patient.

To ensure the health & safety of both recipients and those delivering the service.

To contribute towards best practice within the department.

To assist the porter management team in the development of the service.

### Job responsibilities

Our porters play a vital role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the hospital by providing a wide range of essential support services. Typical day-to-day responsibilities include:

- Transporting patients safely and professionally throughout the hospital using beds, trolleys, and wheelchairs.
- Collecting and delivering specimen samples, blood products, and other clinical items to support patient care.
- Delivering pharmaceuticals to wards and departments in a timely and secure manner.
- Collecting and distributing medical gases across the hospital.
- Providing waste collection and disposal services in line with hospital policies and infection prevention standards.
- Transporting patient meal trolleys to and from wards.
- Delivering clean linen to wards and departments.
- Collecting and distributing internal and external mail and postal items.
- Assisting with the movement of furniture and hospital equipment as required.
- Working closely with the mortuary department, carrying out duties with professionalism, dignity, and respect.

Hospital porters are an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, ensuring patients, staff, and essential resources are moved safely and efficiently to support the delivery of high-quality patient care.

- A willingness to accept constructive feedback and use it as an opportunity for personal and professional development.
- The ability to work effectively both as part of a team and independently, using initiative to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Excellent verbal communication skills, along with strong thinking, problem-solving, and reasoning abilities.
- A good understanding of health and safety principles and the importance of following hospital policies and procedures.
- Basic computer literacy, with the ability to complete mandatory online training and use hospital IT systems where required.
- A reliable, flexible, and positive attitude, with a commitment to providing a high standard of service and supporting patient care.

### Qualifications

**Desirable**

- Good Spoken English, along with good reading and writing skills.
- Basic IT skills.
