### Job overview

This an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the delivery and development of pharmacy services across Northumbria Healthcare. The post supports the safe, efficient and cost-effective supply of medicines, with responsibilities spanning procurement, pharmacy IT systems and business information.

Working closely with pharmacy and wider Trust teams, the post holder will contribute to medicines governance, service improvement and the development of the North East and North Cumbria Formulary, while leading a the Pharmacy Procurement Team. The role also provides the opportunity to use and develop specialist technical, analytical and leadership skills, in addition to clinical and operational knowledge, alongside maintaining a practising pharmacy technician role.

### Main duties of the job

- Lead and develop pharmacy procurement and homecare services, helping ensure patients have timely access to safe, effective and value-for-money medicines.
- Use data and technology to improve pharmacy services, managing key pharmacy IT systems and producing meaningful information to support decision-making and service improvement.
- Lead a small business and administration team, providing direction, support and opportunities for development.
- Contribute to medicines governance and service development, including the Medicines Homecare Group and the North East and North Cumbria Formulary.
- Drive improvement and manage risk, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, patient safety and the use of medicines across the Trust.
- Use your specialist pharmacy technician expertise, providing technical advice and supporting clinical and operational pharmacy services when required.
- Work collaboratively across the Trust, building effective relationships with pharmacy, clinical, finance, IT and external partners to deliver better medicines services.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- To manage and support the Pharmacy Procurement team with the safe provision of medicines for use in the Trust.
- Provide clinical support to staff and patients engaged in the management of patients within service.
- To manage and develop all Pharmacy computer and IT systems (e.g. Optum, ARX interface and Powergate). To develop and increase the utilisation of information technology and management information to aid decision-making and facilitate operational effectiveness.
- To support the management and provision of medicines related homecare services across the Trust
- To support the various business functions of the Pharmacy service through data management, manipulation and co-ordination, e.g. Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reporting, drug reports etc.
- Provide input into the Trust’s Medicines Homecare Group (MHG), supporting the Chair of this group.
- To manage a team of business and administration staff who support the delivery of the above services.
- To provide support to the Lead Clinical Pharmacist – Procurement, Formulary and Business Information with the local management of the North East and North Cumbria (NENC) Formulary.
- To provide Pharmacy technical support and advice on pharmaceutical matters and those pertaining to medicines management when required. Medicines management encompasses the selection, procurement, dispensing, delivery, prescribing, administration and review of medicines to optimise the contribution they make to produce informed and desired outcomes of patient care. It includes all the processes, activities and systems inside and outside of pharmacy undertaken by doctors, nurses, porters, GPs, pharmacy staff etc.
- To work as a practising pharmacy technician, undertaking dispensary work and ward based clinical and technical duties when required.
- To support the work of other senior technical staff, undertaking relevant duties as required e.g. providing cover.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

## Person Specification

### Experience and knowledge

**Essential**

- Relevant hospital experience
- Patient facing, ward based clinical experience

**Desirable**

- Previous experience of working in a pharmacy procurement, IT or business information area
- Previous experience of staff management and development

### Qualifications / Professional Registration

**Essential**

- BTEC in pharmaceutical science or NVQ Level 3 supported by appropriate underpinning knowledge e.g. BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences, NPA or equivalent qualification.
- Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (if not registered, will be required to register as a condition of appointment).
- To have successfully completed an appropriate accredited technician checking qualification e.g. regional scheme (if not already held there will be an expectation to achieve this when a training opportunity becomes available).
- Evidence of relevant continuing professional development.
- A1 or equivalent NVQ assessor qualification (if not already held there will be an expectation to achieve this when a training opportunity becomes available).
- IT skills to European Computer Driving License (ECDL) standard or equivalent experience.

**Desirable**

- To hold a qualification for Medicines Management for Pharmacy Technicians e.g. Derby University Clinical Pharmacy Technician Diploma or Regional Medicines Management.
- V1 or equivalent NVQ internal verifier qualification (if not already held there will be an expectation to achieve this when a training opportunity becomes available).
- Relevant purchasing qualification or equivalent experience
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent management qualification e.g. ISM and/or significant relevant management experience
