ACCOUNTABLE TO: Aseptic and Cancer Services Lead Pharmacist

### JOB SUMMARY

To be part of the multi-professional team providing a cost effective Chemotherapy and Aseptic dispensing service. This includes supporting the dispensing and supply of parenteral nutrition, CIVAS, biologics and chemotherapy treatments within the Trust. The post holder will assist in providing all technical aspects of the Service.

### KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

To assist in the provision of all aspects of the Chemotherapy and Aseptic Services section of the Pharmacy department.

To participate in the preparation of intravenous chemotherapy drugs, biological drugs, TPN and other aseptically dispensed products within the aseptic unit.

To dispense, label, and package oral chemotherapy and all supportive medications required for chemotherapy patients.

To prepare and use isolators and work areas correctly, in line with aseptic procedures

To ensure completed products are stored under the correct conditions.

Undertake and maintain Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training to be able to dispense oncology/haematology clinical trial drugs.

To complete the accredited checking technician Pre and in-process

checking qualification. To participate in the duties of the Pre and in-

process checks in the Aseptic unit.

To undertake and complete the Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician

(ACPT) program if required to do so.

To assist in the maintenance of the Aseptic Services section with respect

to stock control, procurement of drugs and equipment, cleaning and

general upkeep of the department.

To ensure all preparations and sundries within the Aseptic unit are appropriately issued and charged to the correct cost centre on a daily basis.

Compile a weekly order to ensure stock of unlicensed Prefilled syringes/infusion bags of chemotherapy and biological drugs used within the unit.

Ensure all physical and microbiological monitoring is carried out within

defined time frames within the aseptic unit and assist the Aseptic Services

Manager/Lead Aseptic Technician in the development and implementation

of monitoring schedules ensuring parameter breaches are actioned in line with department guidelines.

Collate results and reports relating to the quality assurance of the environment in the Aseptic unit and assist with investigations of out of spec results and implementation of remedial actions.

To prepare staff training folders and participate in the technical training and mentoring of S/ATO, Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacists and other staff as required.

Ensure staff are familiar and comply with statutory and in-house safe systems of work, and standard operating procedures.

Supervise and co-ordinate staff within the section including rota cover.

To take on the responsibility of technical team leader within Aseptic Services when necessary.

Maintenance of personal aseptic validations and undergo personal training and re-assessment as directed in the aseptic dispensing procedures

To assist the Aseptic Services Manager/Lead Aseptic Technician in the maintenance, updating and development of in-house documentation and standard operating procedures in accordance with published standards.

Ensure weekly stock checks and expiry checks are carried out and followed

up and participate in annual stock-taking within the unit.

To assist the Lead Aseptic Technician in the assessment ,safety, storage

and supply of unlicensed medicines and consumables in line with regulatory requirements and policies.

Maintain competency to ensure inclusion on the register of designated

personnel for the preparation and supply of intrathecal chemotherapy in the trust.

Maintain exposure records of all staff involved in the preparation of chemotherapy drugs.

To assist with accurate workload / financial statistics in relation to intravenous/oral chemotherapy, biological drugs and TPN within the unit.

To assist in the management of the storage and maintenance of pharmacy patient treatment records, both manual and electronic, in accordance with the legal requirements and good practice.

To assist in the development and introduction of new technologies and

working practices designed to improve the efficiency and running of the

aseptic unit.

To assist in ensuring that working practices and the environment conform to

current statutory, legislative requirements, Trust and local policies with

regard to Health and safety issues

To maintain and develop personal knowledge and skills through attendance

at relevant courses.

Liaise with staff via telephone regarding patient treatments and respond to issues and requests in a timely manner.

Participate in dispensary activities when required including checking and issuing medications to patients providing counselling and advice as per remit.

Comply with all relevant registration and CPD requirements.

Maintain staff relationships, morale and motivation amongst the staff working

with you.

Perform any other duties as assigned by the Lead Pharmacist/Lead

Technician from time to time.

Participate in the weekend/Bank Holiday and extended hours working in

Accordance with relevant rotas, including shifts if required.

Conduct oneself in an appropriate manner and maintain the required standards of appearance and dress as required by Senior Pharmacy Management.

### HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Review individually, at least annually, the performance of immediately subordinate staff, provides guidance on personal development requirements and advises on and initiates, where appropriate, further training.

2. Maintain staff relationships and morale amongst the staff reporting to him/her.

3. Participate, as required, in the selection and appointment of staff reporting to him/her in accordance with procedures laid down by the Trust.

Take such action as may be necessary in disciplinary matters in accordance with procedures laid down by the Trust.

### GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

### The post holder will be required to

OR

If qualified after June 2009

BTEC and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or Diploma in Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians (combined) or equivalent knowledge and competency based qualifications in pharmacy as defined by GPhC.

If qualified before June 2009

BTEC level 3 National certificate in Pharmacy Services or equivalent knowledge based qualification in pharmacy
