### Job overview

- The post holder is responsible and accountable for implementation of robust systems and processes that ensure there is a continuing improvement in the quality of the service/care provided to patients across all sites within University Hospital Tees. The post holder is also responsible and accountable for:
- Providing strong, visible clinical and professional nursing leadership.
- For the safe preparation of elective patients for anaesthesia and surgery.
- Develop strong working relations with speciality teams to actively support and monitor the delivery of high-quality services.
- To provide a quality and safe service for patients within the unit, to identify and act upon risk factors which can be optimised prior to surgery.
- Ensure effective recruitment and retention initiatives are implemented to ensure that bank   and agency spend is kept to a minimum.
- To provide emotional and educational support for patients prior to having surgery.
- To reduce the rate of cancellation on day of, or near to date of surgery, to optimise theatre utilisation.
- In collaboration with the Clinical Lead and Perioperative manger, will ensure that patient care is undertaken within National Guidelines, provided and supported by the Pre-Operative Association and Royal collage of Anaesthetists. Work with management teams within the variety of specialties to ensure the demands of their capacity are met safely.

### Main duties of the job

Patient / client care, development of specialised nurse led care to defined caseload supporting patients along clinical pathways and protocols of care. Deliver nurse led Pre-Assessment service, as an independent nursing practitioner, developing advanced professional/clinical skills/knowledge in areas such as; detailed clinical assessment of patients, consent, prescribing and the ordering and interpretation of radiological and pathological tests. Supports patients to be partners in their own health care through education, discussion and explanation of care. Works as a member of the senior clinical team, to advise and support colleagues in the delivery of specialised patient care across professional boundaries. Undertake or advise on the management of a specific aspect of medical care. Be responsible for the line management of team members and the services areas aligned. The post holder will undertake any employee relation issues in accordance with Trust Policy. Work in partnership with others to:

- Ensure highest standards of patient care and safety.
- Co-ordinate the care for patients in specialised area of practice.
- Contribute to the delivery of a planned specialised programme of nursing care.

- - Cardio Pulmonary Exercise testing.
- - Pulmonary Function testing.

### Knowledge and Skills

**Essential**

- - Significant post registration experience in Peri Operative Medicine.
- - Experience in providing care for patients undergoing surgery / anaesthesia.
- - Experience in assessment of patient’s comorbidities.
- - Teaching/Mentorship/Preceptorship experience.
- - Extensive Anaesthetics or pre-operative assessment experience.
- - Analytical and judgmental skills.
- - Specialist problem solving and assessment skills.
- - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- - Ability to work autonomously or as a team member, as well as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team.
- - Able to interpret a full range of pre-operative investigations.
- - Competent in comprehensively assessing patients with complex co-morbidities and performing cardio-pulmonary examination line with evidence-based practice.
- - Involvement in facilitating innovative practice.
