The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH) has an exciting opportunity within the Children's Hospital Unit to appoint a Paediatric Consultant (5PAs).

The postholder will be expected to maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of paediatrics and will undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility which relates to paediatric medicine

The post includes 8 full attending weeks per year with daily ward round for the paediatric inpatients in CHDU and Coxen ward. Attending weeks run Wednesday to Wednesday and there is an MDT handover meeting on Wednesday. Attending weeks can be split in accordance with the needs of the individual and service.

You must be fully registered with the GMC/GDC and hold a full License to Practise and be on the specialist register, or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at interview stage.

### Main duties of the job

- The postholder will be expected to maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of paediatrics and will undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility which relates to paediatric medicine.
- The post includes 8 full attending weeks per year with daily ward round for the paediatric inpatients in CHDU and Coxen ward. Attending weeks run Wednesday to Wednesday and there is an MDT handover meeting on Wednesday.
- The consultant is expected to provide further on site paediatric input until 5 pm (weekdays) and 1pm (weekends). Ward cover is provided by the attending consultant paediatrician off site from 5pm to 8am (weekdays) and off site from 1pm-9am (on weekends).
- The post holder will be expected to take a lead role in the care of postoperative patients on the children’s ward.
- There is specific time allocated within this role for supporting the pre-assessment of children  with complex neuromuscular conditions for spinal deformity correction.
- The post holder will be expected to take an active and engaged role in departmental and academic responsibilities as allocated by agreement across the department, including cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences as appropriate.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Jobs with 5 Programmed Activities will be offered as 4 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 1 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA). There will be an initial job plan review meeting with the Clinical Director within the first 6 months of employment. The specific job plan will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant.

- The post will have direct clerical and operational support as well as secondary administrative support to facilitate the consultant’s participation in national and local audits and registries.
- The department are moving towards a team-based approach to their workload.
- Resources are deployed flexibly in the way that best meets patients’ needs. The post holder would be expected to participate in this approach.
- The job plan will involve the following commitments: -

Up to 4 PAs Direct Clinical Care including:

- 8 attending weeks per year

No less than 1 PA Supporting Professional Activities

- Agreement should be reached with the Clinical Director with regard to scheduling of activities, including Supporting Professional Activities.

- Able to integrate within the Paediatric Unit and compliments the existing skills/ interests of the Paediatric Directorate.

### Experience

- Experience in UK Health system

- Experience of acute postoperative care.

- Demonstration of an understanding of NHS management structure.

- Evidence of attendance on managerial course(s),

- Willing to reside within 30 minutes’ drive of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital when on-call.

- Experience of preparing medically complex patients for surgery
- Interest in Respiratory/Neurodisability medicine

- Full GMC registration

- Level 3 safeguarding training

**Desirable**

- Evidence of training with regards to teaching health professionals
