### Job summary

The post holder works as part of the ward / department team under the supervision of registered nurses and:

*Participates in the delivery of patient centred care, maintaining a compassionate and professional attitude at all times.

*Contributes to the ward / department organisation.

*Support registered nurses in the provision of a caring and safe environment.

The post holder will demonstrate competence in generic and specialist skills as required within a time frame agreed with their manager following the completion of appropriate training and education. The Band 2 Health Care Assistant will function at a competency level in line with the requirements of the post and achieve and maintain both mandatory and statutory training requirements associated with the role.

Successful applicants will start as Clinical Support Workers (CSWs) and complete the Care Certificate and Healthcare Support Worker competencies. On successful completion, you will progress to the role of Healthcare Assistant (HCA).

### Main duties of the job

*Work cooperatively as part of the multi-disciplinary team supporting colleagues in work associated with patient care.

*Communicate clearly, effectively and appropriately with the multidisciplinary team, patients and their family, visitors and carers

*Following appropriate training and supervised practice, undertake identified competency-based practices which are required for the ward / unit, after such tasks have been delegated to them by a registered nurse.

*Chaperone and act as an advocate for patients during examination by clinical staff.

*Ensure privacy and dignity for all patients is maintained

*Act in a non-discriminatory manner at all times being mindful of the requirements of each individual patient.

*Escalate concerns regarding discriminatory practises.

*Respond swiftly to individuals, who require assistance, are in pain or distressed or using their call bell, where required report this to a registered nurse.

*Obtain specimens ensuring accurate documentation and transportation to appropriate department. Undertake infection control screening as requested.

### Job responsibilities

*Following the completion of training undertake a range of physical / clinical observations appropriate to the area of practice. Achieve and maintain competence in using a range of equipment to undertake these, record the outcome and report and escalate exceptions to the registered nurse who delegated the tasks to you. Measuring and recording may include:

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- * Experience of working / participating as part of a team as an employee / volunteer.
- * Ability to demonstrate/ articulate an understanding of the role and tasks involved and can describe the physical and emotional aspects of the role and some duties
- * Can link the Trust values (Kind, Bold, Connected) to the role and provide examples from personal experience which demonstrate understanding in relation to the role
- * Can explain why training / education and approaches to care need to be consistent in relation to safety and patient experience

**Desirable**

- * Has experience of working in a person centred/ facing role in a paid or voluntary capacity.
- * Understanding of the principles of safeguarding in relation to this role

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- * Evidence of Maths/English qualifications at Level 2 or above.
- * Vocational qualification at level 2 or equivalent relevant experience.
- * Level 2 examples: GCSE Grades 9-4 (A-C) Level 2 Diploma in health care support/NVQ, Functional Skills Level 2
- * Internationally educated applicants will have to evidence UK ENIC (the UK National Information Centre) Statements of compatibility

**Desirable**

- * Care Certificate or can demonstrate prior skills,knowledge and experience that meet the 15 minimum standards described by Health Education England (HEE) Skills for Health
