### Job overview

The post holder will initially be supra-numerary in 6 clinics and eye casualty sessions per week and will conduct research and quality improvement projects and join departmental teaching in the other 4 sessions/week.

### Main duties of the job

This post is within a well-established, dynamic and cohesive Ophthalmology department. The Trust has a role within Teaching, Trauma and Tertiary service provision in the region; with the RSCH site being a Major Trauma Centre. The post would involve 50% of the time in NHS ophthalmology (eye casualty and clinic) and 50% of the time conducting research, quality improvement and education projects. It is possible that the successful candidate could join a postgraduate fellowship programme at Brighton and Sussex Medical School

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This post is within a well-established, dynamic and cohesive Ophthalmology department. The Trust has a role within Teaching, Trauma and Tertiary service provision in the region; with the RSCH site being a Major Trauma Centre. The post would involve 50% of the time in NHS ophthalmology (eye casualty and clinic) and 50% of the time conducting research, quality improvement and education projects. It is possible that the successful candidate could join a postgraduate fellowship programme at Brighton and Sussex Medical School

The Sussex Eye Hospital is a specialist eye hospital with 2 dedicated ophthalmic theatres (1 with anaesthetic cover); 1 ward; outpatients department and a 24hr eye casualty service.  It serves a population of approximately 750,000, through the hub at the Sussex Eye Hospital and the spoke units at Princess Royal Hospital, Lewes Victoria Hospital and Hove Poly clinic.

The Sussex Eye Hospital has an active role in research, supported by its own research team and the trust research department.

It is part of the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust and plays an important part in undergraduate training in conjunction with Brighton and Sussex medical School and post graduate education and training within the KSS School of Ophthalmology.

It is located opposite the Royal Sussex County Hospital and next to the Postgraduate Centre. The Royal Sussex County Hospital provides specialist investigations and liaison with other disciplines. The Postgraduate Centre has meeting/teaching rooms, lecture theatres, an extensive library and a restaurant.

### Experience/Qualifications

**Essential**

- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
- Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification
- High level of clinical experience in all aspects of Ophthalmology
- Basic medical degree
- Evidence of personal patient centred outcomes/audit
- Understanding of the principles of research
- Evidence of participation in audit
