REPORTS TO: Lead Occupational Therapist, Wheelchair Services.

ACCOUNTABLE TO: Professional Head of Occupational Therapy Services

### JOB SUMMARY

The Occupational Therapy Technician for the Wheelchair Service is required to work as a member of the Wheelchair Team, to deliver a high quality Occupational Therapy Wheelchair Service to wheelchair users, their carers and families.

He/she will be responsible for a delegated caseload, in the implementation and evaluation of Occupational Therapy interventions under the guidance of the First Line Manager. They will be required to work with Occupational Therapy colleagues across all programmes of care, responding to clients with a range of physical, sensory and learning disabilities.

He/she will provide technical information and advice relating to wheelchairs, seating systems, pressure relieving cushions and wheelchair accessories. They will be required to analyse technical problems, determine feasible adjustments and action appropriately. They will also be required to participate in local wheelchair clinics and to deliver skills training programmes with wheelchair users and carers.

### KEY RESULT AREAS / MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

To be responsible for a delegated caseload and for organising own workload in line with agreed service priorities, policies and procedures, under the direct supervision of the First Line Manager

To develop a high level of knowledge of the range of wheelchairs and associated products, undertaking regular training to continually update knowledge base. This will involve acting as a resource and adviser on the technical aspects of these products.

To complete the handover of prescribed wheelchairs and associated products in accordance with service standards and procedures, undertaking necessary technical adjustments, within a clinic or community setting eg school, day centre or in the client’s own home

To provide technical advice, information and training to clients and carers on the correct and safe use, care, maintenance, manual handing of the wheelchair and associated products.

To participate in the delivery of Wheelchair Service clinics – assessment, issue, review and training clinics – with Occupational Therapists, Medical Technical Offices or private suppliers. This includes arranging availability of wheelchair equipment, setting up the clinic area, providing technical support and undertaking follow-up activities.

To feedback to the designated, case holder Occupational Therapist regarding client progress, new areas of functional difficulty, changes within their environment and make appropriate judgements regarding the suitability of prescribed wheelchair and associated products

To undertake joint home visits with Occupational Therapists where required, to provide technical advice and information and practical intervention

To develop and deliver wheelchair skills training programmes, individual or group sessions, for cases delegated by the Occupational Therapist, adjusting the programme according the needs of the wheelchair users and their carers.

To develop and deliver local EPIOC wheelchair training programmes to wheelchair users and Occupational therapists. This includes teaching OTs correct client training technique, assessment of performance, risk management and powered wheelchair product selection.

To take responsibility for the maintenance of assessment stock, to include:- Wheelchairs, accessories, cushions – and liaise with the appropriate personnel regarding the servicing and repair of same, to ensure fitness for purpose and readiness for use.

To observe correct and safe moving and handling and risk management procedures, including the use of hoist in domestic and clinic setting, in accordance with Trust Policy and Procedures.

To document all relevant information relating to clinical work of the client’s case record and record information relating to professional activity in accordance with service procedures.

To liaise with other disciplines, the Regional Disablement Service, Approved Repairer and private suppliers to ensure effective communication and sharing of information at all times, in accordance with Trust Procedures.

To have a sound working knowledge of and be responsible for calibration and fault finding of Wheelchair Service equipment used in assessment

To utilise the Regional Disablement Service IT system to monitor progress on the supply of prescribed wheelchairs and assist in maintaining accurate service information using local databases.

To work with other members of the Wheelchair Team to ensure service standards are maintained, propose ways of improving service provision and contribute to the updating and implementation of new service procedures.

To collate resource information for Occupational Therapy staff, ensure ease of access by cataloguing material, organising workstation and circulating information.

To review and reflect on own practice and performance through regular participation in professional supervision and performance development.

To participate in the induction, training and education of new staff and Occupational Therapy students.

To adhere to the College of Occupational Therapist’s Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and service standards and procedures for Technical Instructors.

To take responsibility for own Continuous Professional Development and attend training, courses etc. as directed by First Line Manager.

To bring to the notice of Occupational Therapy Services Management any observed shortfall in service provision and suggested measures to improve services.

To participate as required in service improvement initiatives and audit programmes for the purposes of evaluating and planning effective wheelchair services.

To monitor all aspects and assist with the development of the Trust’s sub contracted temporary loan wheelchair service reporting any issues to the Lead OT.

Responsibility for 6-weekly recalibration of FSA pressure mapping system, and for setting up FSA for assessment of wheelchair users and assisting and training OT staff in use of the pressure mapping system.

To act upon MHRA alerts regarding wheelchair and associated equipment risks, including locating faulty equipment and carrying out MHRA remedial directives.

In conjunction with the Trust’s Transport Department, be responsible for the safe and effective operation of the Wheelchair Service van

To provide feedback to the Lead Occupational Therapist on the efficient and effective use of regionally refurbished wheelchairs

To ensure that the highest standards of infection prevention and control are maintained to ensure patient and client safety

Communicate effectively with other staff and maintain productive working relationships with others

To be aware of the Data Protection Act 1998, the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and Records Management and do not disclose, withhold, retain or dispose of any information unless legally authorised.

### SALARY

BAND 4 £27,485 - £30,162 per annum (pro-rata for part-time)

### HOURS

Normal full-time hours of duty are 37½ hours per week, exclusive of meal times

27 days each year; 29 days after 5 years’ service; 33 days after 10 years’ service and 10 statutory and public holidays.

You will serve a probationary period of normally six months.

### PAY PROTECTION
