### Job overview

The Upper GI Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist provides expert nursing advice, leadership, and support to patients, relatives, carers, and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care. Working autonomously, the post holder manages and coordinates specialist nursing services for patients with Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer, acting as a key worker throughout the patient pathway.

The role involves delivering a nurse-led service that offers specialist advice, education, and clinical expertise, ensuring patients receive timely, evidence-based care that meets local and national standards. The post holder works collaboratively with healthcare professionals across disciplines to optimise patient outcomes, provide holistic support, and facilitate informed decision-making.

As a clinical leader and professional role model, the Clinical Nurse Specialist provides both direct and indirect patient care, contributes to service development, supports teaching and training activities, and participates in research and quality improvement initiatives. The role requires flexibility to provide specialist support and cover across designated clinical areas as required, ensuring continuity and excellence of care for patients with Upper GI cancer.

### Main duties of the job

To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, providing specialist advice and actively seeking evidence based practice which will improve the quality of care and meet the needs of a group of patients.

A holistic approach to caring should be planned that will include the appropriate level of physiological; pathological; spiritual, socio-economical and cultural aspects which influence the care of clients within your specific specialty. To manage episodes of care as own/joint/shared caseload and discharging patients as per protocol.

To spend time in clinical practice acting as a role model to ensure the delivery of nursing care is at highest possible level to meet patient care.

To act as a key worker for patients in the case load, providing seamless, coordinated treatment pathway ensuring that scans, outpatient appointments etc are arranged such as to avoid treatment interruptions keeping the patient informed at all times.

To work with the Upper GI Cancer team taking an active role in involving users and carers in developing the service.
