### Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join the safeguarding service at University Hospital Southampton as the named nurse for safeguarding children.

Providing strategic and operational support and oversight to Southampton Children's Hospital and wider areas of the trust to ensure that safeguarding practice meets the needs of our patients and our population.

Managing a small but exceptional team of safeguarding nurses and practitioners, and working closely with colleagues in maternity and adult safeguarding to embed a whole of life approach, you will advocate for children and their families at all points in their journey through our trust.

Working closely with clinical and non-clinical staff throughout the organisation, you will raise the profile of safeguarding and support the continual drive for excellence and the best possible outcomes.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role will deliver effective leadership across the safeguarding team, as part of a cohesive and integrated leadership team, supporting the trust to meet its statutory obligations.

You will lead on operational support, particularly in highly complex cases, providing advice, guidance and escalation where needed.

You will lead the improvement and sustainability of safeguarding training across the organisation, understanding and responding to challenges faced by teams.

You will represent the trust at a wide range of multi-agency forums, including safeguarding partnerships and statutory reviews.

You will be registered with the NMC and have significant experience within the safeguarding children arena, including specialist training in this area.  You will be experienced in working with statutory and non-statutory reviews and embedding learning into practice to ensure future practice protects children and families.

You will have a strong understanding of leadership in safeguarding and the role that this plays in promoting teamwork and safety in the workplace.

You will be required, on occasion, to travel for work within the Southampton and Hampshire areas, and you must be able to make arrangements for this.

## Person Specification

### Qualifications, knowledge and experience

**Essential**

- Educated to degree level or equivalent level of experience
- NMC/HCPC registration
- Working towards a master’s degree, or equivalent level of experience
- Experience of delivering challenging messages to a complex and varied group of stakeholders.
- Experience of supporting the emotional wellbeing of self and others whilst working with challenging and sometimes upsetting work content.
- Experience of leading individuals and teams, with conflicting priorities and able to reflect on own leadership style and the needs of others.
- Expert level knowledge of Safeguarding children and looked after children agendas.
- Experience of multi-agency challenge and feedback, and an understanding of the political system that safeguarding functions within.
- Formal leadership / management training
- Specialist experience / training relating to safeguarding.
- Experience of responding to complex safeguarding situations requiring urgent resolution and escalation to ensure legal duties towards patients are met.
- Experience of contributing to multi-agency reviews including PSIIs, Local Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews and domestic homicide reviews, analysing practice and recommending actions for improvement.

**Desirable**

- Escalation to executive levels internally and externally in complex situations.
- Experience of supporting embedding learning in practice outside own area of practice.
- Formal change management training completed.
- Formal leadership training at Level 7
- Experience of writing and critiquing policies in line with local and national guidance and legislation.
- Expert level knowledge of Safeguarding Adults and its interlink with the safeguarding children agenda
- Experience of working with the Local Safeguarding Children Partnerships and subgroups to align strategy, priorities and practice.
