The Medical Examiner Officer (MEO) will coordinate and support Medical Examiners in their role in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of deaths within the Trust and community.

### Skills

**Essential**

- Ability to work as part of a team and organise fluctuating workload around competing priorities.
- Willing to develop own skills and knowledge
- Excellent verbal and written communications including accurate report writing
- Able to work under own initiative
- Approachable and supportive to all levels of staff and bereaved families in a non-judgemental and discreet manner.
- Computer literate has experience in data inputting, databases and Microsoft Office software
- Able to act as a resource and demonstrate excellent negotiation skills.
- Ability to review and interpret clinical records (to include diagnostic tests, medication charts and clinical assessments/observations) and judge which information relevant to support cause of death discussion and medical examiner scrutiny

**Desirable**

- Management level experience
- Ability to collate, analyse and interpret data and produce reports
- Teaching and presentation skills

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
- Knowledge of the Coroner & Justice Act 2009 reference to the medical examiner system. Full understanding of the medical examiner system operational remit when incorporated within Bereavement Services or as a stand-alone office.
- Knowledge of the special requirements of various faith groups and respect for equality and diversity of issues around formalities following a death.
- Knowledge of patient safety and risk issues
- General knowledge of Clinical/ medical terminology that enables informed discussions about causes / circumstances of death with bereaved families

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of how the public sectors work and NHS works

### Experience

**Essential**

- Experience of working with people in sensitive and emotional situations.
- Experience of working in a healthcare setting with multi-disciplinary teams across organisational boundaries.
- Excellent general knowledge of clinical/medical terminology.
- Experience of working under pressure and meeting deadlines

**Desirable**

- Experience of using hospital administration and patient information Systems
- Experience of reviewing, developing and writing operating policies for the work place.

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Educated to Batchelor’s degree level or equivalent working knowledge in related field
- Relevant professional clinical qualification e.g. Registered General Nurse, ODP, AHP etc. or equivalent experience
- Completed e-learning MEO core training modules prior to starting in the post or within the first 6 months
- Teaching and Education qualification and experience
