An exciting opportunity has arisen for Medical Examiner Officer to join the Trust as part of the national implementation of the Medical Examiner system in England and Wales. The aim of this service is to be able to scrutinise deaths within acute hospitals and also the circumstances of all community deaths in the corresponding areas. You will be a point of contact and source of advice for relatives of deceased patients, healthcare professionals and coroner and registration services. You will be part of the Medical Examiner's office ensuring internal and external qualitative and quantitative key performance indicators are managed and achieved and work closely with the bereavement team, mortality team, Coroner's Office and registrar services to provide the best experience for bereaved families. You will also act as an expert within the Trust for mortality processes and systems and ensure all staff are appropriately supported to fulfil their responsibilities relating to the Medical Examiner's Office.

### Main duties of the job

To act as an intermediary between the bereaved and clinicians which will often be very complex and sensitive to establish and resolve any concerns relating to a patient’s death. Work with medical examiners to aid them in their responsibility for overseeing the death certification process for all deceased patients in the organisation.To establish the circumstances of individual patient deaths by performing a preliminary review of medical records to identify clinical and circumstantial information, cases of which will often have complex and complicated circumstances and require the need to source additional details, for scrutiny by the medical examiner.

### Applicant requirements

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.

### Skills

**Essential**

- Competent in the use of IT software systems and handling sensitive personal identifiable data

### Knowledge

**Essential**

- Experience of working with people in sensitive and emotional situations.
- Experience of working in a healthcare setting with multi-disciplinary teams across organisational boundaries
- Ability to work as part of a team and organise fluctuating workload around competing priorities
- Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating the ability to communicate in difficult and emotional situations with empathy and professionalism with all stakeholders

### Education and Qualifications

**Essential**

- Educated to degree level or equivalent working knowledge in related field
- Knowledge of the Coroner & Justice Act 2009 reference to the medical examiner system. Full understanding of the medical examiner system operational remit when incorporated within Bereavement Services or as a stand-alone office.

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of the special requirements of various faith groups and respect for equality and diversity of issues around formalities following a death.
