### Job overview

The post holder will work as part of a diverse and multidisciplinary Medical Equipment Management Service team to ensure the safe use of medical devices across the Trust.

The post holder will carry out acceptance testing, servicing and repair of complex medical equipment and devices. They will take part in workshop rotas and timetables, and maintain records of all completed work timely and accurately on the comprehensive equipment management information technology system. Where necessary the post holder will undertake training in order to develop, upskill and fulfill the evolving needs of the role. Training of clinical staff in the use of medical equipment will be required occasionally.

Maintain, test, repair, calibrate, and dispose of medical equipment, including fault diagnosis and safety checks.

Provide technical advice and support to clinical staff, including training when required.

Liaise with suppliers and contribute to equipment evaluation and incident investigations.

Service and repair equipment in clinical areas and provide on-site support.

Maintain accurate records using IT systems and ensure data quality.

Follow and improve quality procedures and manage workload and maintenance schedules.

Comply with health and safety requirements, identify risks, and support safe working practices.

### Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Medical Engineering Technician post is a key role within the Medical Equipment Management Service (MEMS), providing essential technical support to ensure the safe, effective, and compliant use of medical devices across the Trust, with a particular focus on the Endoscopy and Diagnostic Centre at PRUH. The post holder will be responsible for the full lifecycle management of medical equipment, including acceptance testing, commissioning, routine servicing, fault diagnosis, repair, calibration, and disposal. This role is critical in ensuring that medical devices are maintained to the highest safety and performance standards, directly supporting frontline clinical services and patient care.

The post holder will undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM) in line with agreed schedules, ensuring equipment reliability and minimising the risk of failure or disruption to clinical activity. They will be required to diagnose and resolve complex technical faults using specialised test equipment and manufacturer service manuals, ensuring that all repairs are completed efficiently and in accordance with relevant standards and guidelines. In addition, the role involves electrical safety testing and performance verification to ensure full compliance with regulatory and safety requirements.

A key aspect of the role is supporting clinical teams by attending clinical areas to carry out repairs and servicing, often within time-sensitive environments. The post holder will provide technical advice to clinical users on the safe and effective use of equipment, helping to reduce user-related faults and improve overall service efficiency. They will also liaise with equipment manufacturers and suppliers regarding technical issues, maintenance requirements, and procurement support.

**Essential**

- Able to communicate complex technical information to technical and non-technical staff, deliver training to technical and non-technical staff, and communicate with external organisations, including suppliers and manufacturers.
- Capable of analysing and diagnosing faults on complex equipment and able to operate and calibrate specialised test equipment.
- Able to prioritise and manage own workload, schedule assigned periodic maintenance of equipment, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Able to use fine tools when working on delicate equipment and lift medium weights (up to 20kg).
- Able to follow and comment on written work instructions, use Microsoft Word and Excel to produce reports and extract information, and use medical equipment management software to record work completed on equipment.
- Able to maintain concentration despite an unpredictable work pattern and deal with occasional distressing circumstances when working in clinical areas.

### Knowledge and Experience

**Essential**

- Knowledge of medical electronics and medical equipment.
- Understanding of the use of equipment in the clinical environment.
- Basic knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (EN 13485, DB 2006, IEC 60601-1, Medical Devices Regulations, Health and Safety).
- Understanding of the hazards posed by, and precautions needed with: - non-ionising radiation - electricity – medium voltages and currents - biological hazards - workshop hazards - chemical hazards from mercury, cleaning agents, fumes from solvents, glues and so on - tools at elevated temperatures (i.e. soldering iron) - compressed medical gases - handling heavy and delicate equipment

### Education and Qualifications

- Electronics knowledge to degree level or equivalent.

- Working towards becoming a member of the Voluntary Register for Clinical Technologists (VRCT).
