A permanent vacancy has arisen within the Estates & Facilities Directorate for an experienced and motivated Mechanical Technician to join Barts Health NHS Trust. This role is ideal for candidates with a strong plumbing or HVAC background who are looking to advance their careers within a highly specialised and supportive hospital environment.

Working across St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals, you will play a key role in maintaining the mechanical infrastructure that keeps our world‑class clinical services running safely and efficiently.

As a member of the Hospitals Mechanical team, you will have:

- Opportunity to work with complex HVAC systems, medical gases, heating plant, chilled water systems, and specialist ventilation supporting theatres and critical care.

### Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities will include:

- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs across a wide range of mechanical systems.
- Diagnose and resolve faults on plumbing, HVAC and associated mechanical plant.
- Undertake testing, inspection and statutory compliance activities (e.g., pressure systems, water hygiene tasks).
- Support minor installation works across the retained estate.
- Ensure all work is delivered safely, efficiently, and in line with relevant regulations and Health & Safety guidance.

Candidates will be required to have:

- A formally recognised mechanical qualification (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent).
- Completed apprenticeship in Mechanical, Plumbing, HVAC or Building Services Engineering.
- Experience in mechanical installation, maintenance or engineering — healthcare experience desirable but not essential.
- Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail and pride in the quality of your workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet shared goals.
- Good communication skills and a proactive, customer‑focused approach.

- Knowledge of control systems and Building Management Systems (BMS)
- Knowledge of Mechanical / Electrical Installations including Ventilation, Air conditioning, Fire Alarm systems and StandBy Generators
- Basic computer skills

- Knowledge of Building services and engineering maintenance
- Understanding of statutory compliance and best practice ACOPS

### Experience

- In-depth relevant experience of NHS hospital environment or similar establishments

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- To have served a recognised Apprenticeship (to City & Guild 236/NVQ level 3 standard / BTEC – ONC/HNC/HND or equivalent)
- The Level 3 NVQs in Mechanical Engineering Services – Heating, Plumbing and Ventilating or BTEC/ONC or equivalent

**Desirable**

- Electrical/Mechanical Degree
- C&G 18th Edition Certificate Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671
- Good knowledge of H&S Legislation and some knowledge of COSHH
- Knowledge of hospital Health Building Notifications (HBN) & Health Technical Memorandum (HTM)
- Competent Person MGPS
