The Opportunity

Are you a visionary nurse leader ready to build something from the ground up? We are launching a brand-new Surgical Assessment Unit at Charing Cross Hospital and are looking for an exceptional Band 8A Matron to lead this flagship service.

The Role

As the Matron for our new SAU, you will be the clinical and operational heartbeat of the unit. You will:

- Drive Service Launch: Lead the operational setup and strategic direction of the new unit.
- Inspire Excellence: Provide highly visible, expert leadership to a multidisciplinary team.
- Innovate Patient Flow: Develop and implement expert surgical pathways to ensure rapid assessment and high-quality care.
- Nurture Talent: Mentor a diverse team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
- Champion Safety: Oversee clinical governance and quality standards to ensure an outstanding patient experience.

### Main duties of the job

To provide professional leadership and clinical role modelling to inspire the nursing team in the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU).

- To provide a clear focus for clinical leadership, providing a highly visible and authoritative presence, in order to facilitate the provision of high quality care, ensuring that the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of care delivery.
- To provide assurance to the Directorate Triumvirate that high quality patient focused care which positively contributes to the patient’s overall experience is being delivered.
- To develop and embed procedures, guidelines and protocols to support the development of a safe and efficient service.
- To monitor the level of service provided by the support services through regular audit and take remedial action as necessary.
- To take responsibility for clinical standards of care, monitoring of quality indicators, infection control prevention and patient experience.
- To foster a culture of incident reporting and responding to incidents, reflection, equal opportunity, openness, mutual respect between the professions and professional development within the unit
- To support the development of nursing research and audit
- To ensure that mechanisms are in place for the collection and submission of appropriate data in respect to service delivery.
- To support the achievement of care and service delivery targets

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.

## Person Specification

### Experience

**Essential**

- Currently working at band 7 or above in an urgent and emergency care or a surgical assessment unit setting
- Experience of budget and resource management
- Experience of clinical governance, patient safety, patient experience and clinical effectiveness
- Work within the scope of the NMC Code Standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives.

### Education/ qualifications

**Essential**

- RN level 1
- Degree in Nursing
- Leadership or management qualification

**Desirable**

- Leadership or management qualification

### Skills/knowledge/ abilities

**Essential**

- Demonstrable leadership skills
- Effective time management for self and others
- Able to manage difficult situations effectively.
- Be a competent user of Microsoft 365
