The maternity support worker is expected to undertake an agreed range of extended skills to support the midwifery service within the antenatal clinic setting. The midwife will be responsible for all care and supervision; whilst the maternity support worker will not always work under direct and immediate supervision, the task being done must be within the framework of a care plan.

The maternity support worker will be an effective member of the team and will provide support in a kind, considerate and professional manner to the woman and her family in providing holistic care. There may be occasions when the maternity support worker is required to work in other areas within the maternity department; whilst at all times working under the direction of the midwife present within the department​

### Main duties of the job

- Work as part of the outpatient Maternity team within the antenatal clinic setting
- Perform basic observations, urinalysis and phlebotomy if required
- Give competent SBAR handovers to members of the team within your remit
- Perform basic IT functions, documenting on our Badgernet system contemporaneously, the care given to women
- Assist the midwife in any basic tasks that need undertaking
- Keeping areas and equipment clean and tidy
- Stocking up store rooms, rooms and trolleys with appropriate resources and equipment
- Support the wider team however required, eg running simple errands and telephones
- Work alongside the midwife to recognise those women who may need urgent attention and help escalate accordingly
- Chaperoning obstetric staff for procedures if required

## Person Specification

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- Good all round education to GCSE level or equivalent
- Care certificate

**Desirable**

- Further training within the Maternity setting

### Personal attributes

**Essential**

- Effective team worker
- Able to use own initiative
- Excellent communication skills

**Desirable**

- Familiar with the use of IT systems e.g. Badgernet, iPM, iCM, iClip

### Skills and experience

**Essential**

- Clinical NHS Experience as a Band 2 support worker or above

**Desirable**

- Experience in Maternity
- Extended skills, e.g. phlebotomy, ECG
