We are looking for passionate Maternity Support Workers who respond well to change and want to help us improve the care women receive in our community service. Community Maternity Support Workers are expected to work across the West Suffolk Community geographic area.

### Main duties of the job

A Maternity Support Worker uses general skills to enhance the service offered to women and their families across a range of aspects of maternity service delivery under the close supervision of a registrant.

Scope of role:

Maternity Support Workers work alongside registered practitioners and other members of the maternity care team who provide direct delivery of care to women and their families accessing community-based services. They may undertake basic care tasks, as part of routine care for women and their babies, and for which they have been appropriately trained. Where they do so, they will follow planned care programmes whilst being closely supervised by a registered midwife or nurse.

As part of their role an MSW will be required to complete a Care Certificate and other training relevant to the role (You will be paid as a band 2 until completed).

The maternity service at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is evolving. Currently responsible for the care of approximately 2200 births each year, the service offers choice of care pathway, lead professional and place of birth to women primarily living in the Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Thetford, Sudbury, Haverhill and surrounding areas.

- Excellent written and verbal communication

- Able to understand the importance of how to apply person centred values in the care environment: Privacy, Dignity, Respect, Active Participation, Equality, Diversity and Confidentiality
- Demonstrates an awareness of the importance of keeping the clinical environment safe and clean.
- Ability to use computerised systems

**Desirable**

- Knowledge of Data Protection Act
- Understanding of risk Management and health and safety issues, including safe manual handling

### Experience and knowledge

**Essential**

- Working within a hospital or caring environment
- Working/Communicating with the general public
- Communication with a wide range of different people including service users, carer’s and members of the multidisciplinary team
- Working in a team

- Experience of working with families, mothers, and babies

### Education and qualifications

**Essential**

- Regulated Qualifications Framework Level 2 functional skills in literacy and mathematics.
- 5 GCSE Equivalent OR Previous clinical experience within health and social care settings relevant to role and evidences values associated with the NHS constitution and commitment to Level 3 role development including completion of Care Certificate (12 weeks from Commencement of post)

**Desirable**

- Previous experience in a maternity setting
