This is an exciting opportunity to join our dynamic and enthusiastic team who believe in leading from the frontline with the aim of providing outstanding care to our community and investing in the well-being and development of our people. There is a combined Department of Paediatrics and Child Health within the Acute Trust resulting in improved liaison and integration in the care of patients and the training of junior doctors. Paediatric in-patient services and neonatal services are provided at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. The children’s wards, paediatric observation unit, and outpatient clinic opened in 2002, and are sited centrally within the Hospital. The neonatal unit was refurbished in 2014 and is situated in the maternity block. The Dingley Child Development Centre is currently located at Erlegh House, University of Reading. ### Main duties of the job - Job Title: | Consultant - Clinical Speciality / Sub-Speciality: | General Paediatrics - Care Group/Clinical Directorate: | Urgent Care Group/Women’s and Children’s - Reports To: | Clinical Lead for Acute Paediatrics - Accountable To: | Chief Medical Officer (CMO) - Nominal Base: | Royal Berkshire Hospital - Hours: | Full time: 10 Programme Activities (PA)* (or pro rata for part time) - Contract Type: | the post will be 1.0 WTE until early Jan 2027 and will then decrease to 0.7WTE for the remainder of the fixed term contract (initially 6 months, with the potential possibility to extend to 12 months if required) - Salary: | As per Consultant Contract - New or Replacement Post: | Replacement - On-Call Rota Requirements: | To provide on-call cover for paediatrics on a 1 in 14 rota. For further details, contact the Medical Education Team. ### Detailed job description and main responsibilities - The post holder will share clinical and managerial leadership within the Paediatric Department with the present consultant paediatricians. A. Clinical To provide with colleagues, acute and general paediatric services in both In Patient and outpatient settings and on-call cover. B. Management responsibilities Active participation in monthly clinical governance meetings within the integrated paediatric department. Participation and involvement in meetings and other business in the combined Department of Paediatrics. Teaching This includes teaching of medical students and junior doctors who rotate through the Paediatric Department and contributing to the continuing medical education programme of the combined department. It is expected that the post holder will act asclinical supervisor to trainees within the department and the Oxford Deanery Post- Graduate School of Paediatrics. The Department provides residency placements throughout the year to medical students from Oxford University. Research There is active research team at the Royal Berkshire. There are 2 paediatric research nurses, with ongoing recruitment to several multicentre studies. A particular interest in research with a view to becoming principle investigator in studies would be advantageous. There are ample opportunities for research with a wealth of clinical material associated with the large population, links with Reading University and close proximity to Oxford. E. Continuing Professional Development The appointee will be expected to participate in personal appraisals annually and will also be expected to actively take part in the RCPCH CPD program. The responsible officer for the post is currently the Medical Director and there is a revalidation officer to provide administrative support and advice for medical staff maintaining their credentials for revalidation. ### Applicant requirements You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
