This fixed-term locum consultant post is intended to support both the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and the KIDS Intensive Care and Decision Support (KIDSNTS) retrieval service at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. The post is for 10 months to provide maternity cover from August 2026, with the successful candidate dividing their time equally between PICU and KIDSNTS on a 50:50 basis. The role includes the delivery of high-quality paediatric intensive care, retrieval and decision support for critically ill children across the West Midlands network, alongside participation in teaching, quality improvement, governance and service development activities.

The post holder will be expected to maintain clinical standards and protocols, participate in teaching and supervision of junior medical and nursing staff, contribute to audit, quality improvement and governance activity, and support the ongoing development of both services. The role will involve regular clinical duties across both PICU and KIDSNTS on a 50:50 basis, including daytime, on-call and weekend commitments.

The appointee will be expected to participate in the delivery, development and ongoing improvement of paediatric intensive care and retrieval services within the Trust’s Service and Financial Framework and in line with the Trust’s clinical strategy. The post holder will contribute to high-quality clinical care across both PICU and KIDSNTS, including clinical governance, teaching, audit, quality improvement and service development activities.

The post holder will also be expected to participate in the activities of relevant Departmental, Directorate and Trust committees and working groups as required.

## Person Specification

### Qualifications

**Essential**

- MBBS or equivalent qualification
- FRCA/MRCP/MRCPCH/FICM/Equivalent
- On GMC Medical Register
- APLS/PALS/equivalent certification
- Level 3 safeguarding training

**Desirable**

- ETC certification
- Training in simulation
- On GMC Specialist Register (PICM/ Anaesthetics)

### Other requirements

- Experience in complaint investigation and serious incident investigations PSIRF training

### Leadership communication skills

- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

- Demonstration of non-clinical leadership role/s within the paediatrics critical care environment or NHS setting

- Knowledge and experience of clinical and other research related to intensive care and intensive care transport

- Publication in peer-reviewed journals

### Knowledge & Clinical expertise in specialty/sub-specialty

**Essential**

- Completion of RCPCH Progress PICM Curriculum and two years training in an RCPCH PICM ISAC approved center/rotation pediatric intensive care medicine plus six months (minimum) of anesthetics (stand-alone)
- OR Within six months of obtaining CCT for UK RCPCH trainees, on the date of interview
- OR equivalent with evidence in application of attainment of equivalent capabilities
- OR Existing Substantive or Locum practicing consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine in the NHS, including transport
- Experience in management of cardiac patients including post-op cardiac surgical patients and post-operative liver transplant
- Experience in transport of ventilated children.

**Desirable**

- Experience in caring for children on ECLS
- Experience in managing complex long-term patients and paediatric trauma patients.
- Experience in transporting cardiac children.
